At their best Holmes sound like the dour Swedish Americana of Amandine crossed with the poetic melancholy of The Book of Daniel. At their worst, well... that sound can be pretty damn boring and it does get that way after a few songs. But one at a time? All good.
Living like I do in the cold, wet Pacific Northwest, I feel a kinship with the people of Göteborg and their similar grey existence and likewise, I can appreciate the temptation to subsist on music that befits the climate. Art is supposed to reflect your surroundings, is it not? This is the sound of walking down by the water at night in a light drizzle. Of sitting by yourself with a beer in hand, trying to clear your head. True, quiet melancholy; reflective and regretful, but resolved. Honestly, I think it's a beautiful thing and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Though to be sure: moderation is key. A little goes a long, long way.

I\'m not overly wild about Scandinavian groups doing Americana music, however, the Swedish group Amandine is easily one of the best in the field. On their new disc, \"Solace in sore hands\" the aesthetic is pure and the music so well-arranged and performed that I found myself surrendering to the charms of the album. Lead vocals by Olof Gidlöf are in a high register for the most part and they have an aching vulnerability that suits the music. Although this is primarily a slow, contemplative outing, the melodies are strong and you can\'t ignore the delicate beauty of songs like \"Iron wings\". \"Shadow of grief\" is a good example of Gidlöf\'s heartfelt vocals, and the way they stand out amidst sparkling piano and simple guitar parts is distinctly Scandinavian. \"Silver bells\" is the best of the uptempo songs, with a dash of horns providing nice flavor. Overall this is solid, melancholic, folksy pop that sounds great driving on the open road.

During the period from November 05 to November 06 we have spent roughly three months on the road, playing somewhere between 60 and 70 shows in Europe and the US. And while on tour you get to stay in some weird places. So here's the top ten strangest places we've slept at last year.

01. An old torpedo factory in the Castro district of San Francisco
02. A closet in Boston
03. A warehouse in Philadelphia
04. A gazebo in Nashville
05. the "L-hotel" in Connecticut. The kind of road motel you only thought existed in cheap horror movies. Of the HOTEL sign outside, only the "L" was lit. And it got worse once you got inside (and the only thing you could watch on TV was the weather channel).
06. An attic in St Gallen
07. A renaissance villa in Fucheccio (Italy), once owned by the powerful Medici family.
08. A cabin in the middle of nowhere, or wait, it was in the middle of Pennsylvania.
09. A farm outside Verona
10. Every kind of floor imaginable

---------------------------
Amandine says: As we speak we're in the process of mixing our second full-length album. It's scheduled for release in early April (that date might change though) and will hopefully sound a bit rougher around the edges compared to our debut album. If everything goes according to plan we'll follow up the release by touring Europe and the US in the spring and summer of 2007. To keep updated, check out www.amandinemusic.com and www.fat-cat.co.uk.

It started out a bit nervously tonight for Amandine. The sound on stage seemed to be a bit rubbish, although I didn\'t notice this (not being on stage and all), but for the first two songs it felt as if all things weren\'t really in all the right places. Then it all shaped up and, by the end, it was a finished product worthy kings! I really like singer/songwriter and alt.country stuff, but it has to be very good to hold my attention live, since my attention span is way too short and I easily drift off (physically and mentally). Amandine managed to draw me in tonight though, despite them not playing too many songs from their album from last year which are the only songs I\'ve heard from their repertoire. For playing such slow songs, they were quite fun to watch, especially their bass player who looked and behaved as if he was in some punk band. When they had finished, I left the venue, even though Adem (England\'s folk guru #1) was on next (Lisa Germano was meant to headline tonight, but she cancelled). I\'m not too bothered about missing out on Adem (who I, to be honest, have seen too many times), I only came to see Amandine, and it was well worth the little trek to Kilburn (mind you, it\'s almost always worth going to The Luminaire, London\'s best venue).

Many of my closest friends are highly devoted, but I\'ve never a massive fan of the somewhat \"hip\" English label Fat Cat. I can definitely see what the fuss is about though, since Fat Cat keeps on releasing stuff from some of the most interesting bands around (i.e. Animal Collective). My relationship with Fat Cat might change this autumn though, now when they\'re about to release two wonderful albums – one by Vashti Bunyan and another one by the Swedish band Amandine. Since this website is about Scandinavian music only, the following will be about the latter band. \"This is where our hearts collide\" is crammed with marvelous songs that have a hint of Will Oldham over them, but they\'re more indie than alt.country, and with my admiration for Will Oldham subduing a bit lately, Amandine give me those melancholy feelings that you so insanely cherish.

I've made no secret of my admiration for the band Amandine. My curiousity was piqued back in March when the band signed with UK-based label FatCat Records back in March and I've been keeping an eye on them ever since. Lucky for me, my intuition has paid off because their debut album "This is where our hearts collide" is a fine piece of work. It's the perfect album to usher in the autumn season - subdued and downtrodden, but still full of hope and beauty. The sound is very much country-influenced, but it's not by the books. They definitely take cues from folks like Will Oldham and Songs: Ohia, but Amandine doesn't seem nearly as inconsistent. All of their material is quite strong, which is why I let the band themselves pick a track for posting today. "Blood & marrow," they say is, "just a simple and soulful song with kind of a rough edge to it. One of [our] personal favourites off the album. The best part of the song, and I think we all agree on this, is when the drums and the bass kick in in the beginning of the second verse. Gives me goosebumps every time, especially when we do it live." Listen for yourself and I think you'll agree.

The upcoming 7" single from Amandine will be for the song "Halo" and will include the exclusive b-sides "Sparrow" and "Between what he's saying and what he regrets". It comes out September 5 via FatCat. I've been listening to my advance copy of the new album quite a bit and can heartily recommend these guys for anyone into downer folky music. Think Isolation Years crossed with Songs: Ohia.
