Melodramatic pop from Norway with a dark and heavy edge, as would be expected considering the label this is on (Beyond Dawn, etc.). Think mid-period Radiohead, but far more rhythmic and discordant. A bit proggier too, kinda like Dredg or Swedish act Closer. I think the performance on this recording tends to be a bit on the stiff side, but the music is good enough to merit a recommendation anyway.

Musique Machine reviews the reissue of Beyond Dawn's excellent "In reverie" EP: http://www.musiquemachine.com/reviews/reviews_template.php?id=740

Norwegian label Duplicate Recordings has announced their plans for 2006. First up will be a new Beyond Dawn single/EP featuring a new version of The New Men's "Strange relief" remix from the "We're down with species of any kind" 2xLP along with a few unreleased b-sides and one brand new track. The previously announced 3xCD Beyond Dawn retrospective has now been scaled back to a more manageable 2xCD set - one disc of album tracks and one disc of unreleased gems. I'm definitely looking forward to that one as BD has long been one of my favorite bands. Also on the way is "Paralympik sessions" from Norwegian death-grind act Endwarfment which should ready soon along with new stuff from thrashers Warbastard and Infernö. Those latter two are planned for a 06.06.06 release, of course. There might also be a new 7" from Audiopain, but details are still being worked out.

This week's Friday pick comes from Beyond Dawn, one of my long-time absolute favorite Norwegian artists. I've posted tracks from them in the past, but I figure it's time to revisit them especially in light of the recent remaster/reissue of the very excellent "In reverie" EP, the release from which today's track originates. Besides, if I didn't post this today, I'm sure Dark Dose would get around to it soon enough. Beyond Dawn started out as a dirgeful black-metal/doom act, but there was always something different about them. Early on they distinguished themselves with the addition of a trombone player, but it was with this EP that they truly stepped up with the incorporation of electronics and more diverse, acoustic instrumentation. There's definitely echoes of neo-folk era Swans here, but I find that BD is in a league of their own. Their influences may be obvious, but there's no one that sounds quite the same. I do believe that Duplicate Records is offering a special deal to people who order now, so get on it.

Podcast: This is a test (post-rock/electronics)

It's Memorial Day here in the US, so I'm gonna keep this short so I can go out and enjoy my day off.

New mp3 today from the terminally underrated Norwegian act Beyond Dawn off of their new 2xLP remix album "We're down with species of any kind". As one would expect from such a project, it's a mixed bag of sounds and styles. This Snuten track that I picked to share with y'all is the funnest of the bunch. Who would've thought that the sounds of West Coast hip-hop would work so well in such a context? It's especially exciting to hear a piece like this and to compare it to the band's early doom roots. I can't think of any other act that's progressed so far and managed to stay interesting and relevant their whole career. It just doesn't happen. It makes me all the more excited to hear the forthcoming 3xCD 15th anniversary comp "Strictly Mondays – 15 Years Far From Showbiz". Can't wait.

Blabbermouth reports on a new Immortal tribute comp, due out this fall: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=37091
Confirmed artists so far include Aura Noir, Zweizz, Vreid, Beyond Dawn, Sunn 0))) and more.

Duplicate Records has announced plans to release a new 3xCD comp from Beyond Dawn entitled "Strictly Mondays – 15 Years Far From Showbiz" to celebrate the long-running Norwegian group's 15 year anniversary. The labels says: "Expect lots of rare and unreleased stuff, a remastered collection of songs from all the band’s albums, a detailed booklet containing photos, lyrics, press clippings etc., and very likely a surprise or two." One of my long-time favorites, from their humble drone/doom beginnings to their later avant-pop years, this is definitely something to look forward to.

Duplicate Records reports that the Beyond Dawn double remix album "Down With Species Of Any Kind" is finally getting pressed and should be out sometime later this month or in early March. As mentioned before, there will only be 500 copies so act fast if you want one.

Coming up in the near future from Duplicate Records will be a 7" called "Husk, Du Skal Dø" from Norwegian one-man black-metal act Sarath and a rerelease of Beyond Dawn's excellent "In Reverie" EP which orginally came out in 1999 on Eibon. In other news, the label is offering a special 10% off anti-Christmas price on all mailorder through January 1. Duplicate Records/Beyond Dawn-related projects Two Trains, Lamented Souls, Virus and Infernö are all preparing new releases for 2005 along with the brand new side-project Beyond Brain.

Duplicate Records has cut the price of the upcoming Beyond Dawn remix 2xLP. Folks like me who already preordered should be getting a partial refund, otherwise the new price is $21.50 + shipping. Sure, it's still a bit pricey, but it's over an hour of quality music and limited to only 500 copies. For more info, contact the label directly: http://www.duplicate-records.com

Duplicate Records has confirmed a September 15 release for the debut self-titled album from Two Trains. The band consists of members from Beyond Dawn and Lamented Souls and is said to consist of "a hypnotic blend of mellow pop, gritty rock, quirky electronica and masterful songwriting."
