Live report: Cat5 + Vapnet @ the Social, London UK 01/22/07

Tue, 23 Jan 2007 00:00:00 -0800

For the third year, 12th installment and band #22, T!T!T! rolled up its sleeves for a few rounds of world championship unadulterated pop.

The Social has a god-awful sound system, but Vapnet and a deft sound technician truly succeeded (no exaggeration: it really worked). Tonight such harmony, beautiful percussion, instrumentation, blips, squeaks, hand claps and musical widgets sufficed to proselytize all (including Pitchfork early last summer).

What effect they have: "Kalla mig" (as covered by The Sweptaways), "E14", "Prästgarden" and "Thoméegrand" (as amazing as Emmaboda's forfest rendition) which all went down like a Haggis on Burn's night! Evident from Vapnet's set: the more complex, the more prolific the execution becomes with no room to relax – six co-dependants and no heavy amplification to hide behind, are in no uncertain terms, superb.

This was Vapnet's UK debut, and Östersund's debut at T!T!T!, the very town where my own Swedish music/love affair started in 1994, she was Lena Vinger and along with Annika Norlin it was an era of Jämtlander who took 'grov snus'. Lyrics like "Du kan kalla mig bög / kall mig CP" could really never be born anywhere else.

Lest not forget T!T!T! alumni electro pop minxes Cat5 who this evening turned the crowd on in more ways than one, giving a pleasant rise the coldest of London nights this year. "Play loud", "Sexy" and new song "Boys", performed before a projection screen, strobe, smoke and rotating police light, disco ball and velvet curtain backdrop! Naughty Euro-pop kitsch, and slinky to boot.

Some said irony, from my vantage point Cat5 seemed to mean business. Actually serious enough that these girls need dancers, and straight guys throwing boxers on stage - because it's naive, brilliant gayness every time.

Otur Pepperbox hill Vapen & Godis

Wed, 12 Jul 2006 00:00:00 -0700

I openly admit to being a pop princess, but even I need to shake my corduroy-clad booty every once in awhile. And this is just the sort of thing that will have me shimmying across the kitchen floor, waving my pot scrubber as if it were one of those goofy glo sticks. "Apart" is especially fantastic. Slip it into the stereo at the next family get-together, and you might even convince your 13-year-old niece that you've got a bit of cool in you yet. Play her "Enough" and you can also feel smug in the knowledge that you're being a good influence by contributing to her sense of female empowerment. You may already know Otur as Emma Bates, one-third of The Lightbulb Project. Her former bandmates Christina Roos and Hanna Göransson went on to form Swedish girl group Cat5, and unsurprisingly the two projects share a similar sound. But there seems to be more substance here than the Cat5 hits of the moment, "Sexy" and "Stretch and bend". A bit too much substance at the end, actually, as she tried to take me somewhere I wasn't prepared to go, at least not without a good hefty supply of chemical stimulants. Overall though, it's a winning blend of DIY electro-pop and ethereal vocals that will not only appeal to the closet dance diva – I suspect the boys will also appreciate the sweet innocence of Emma's honey voice.

MP3: Otur - Travels right through

Wed, 24 May 2006 00:00:00 -0700

Electropop with big house beats is oh-so-hot right now and I'm really not feeling it at all. It's the kind of music that's tailor-made for the dancefloor, not active listening at home. Likewise, it's also very focused on the single, not the album. There's been quite a lot of huge hype tracks, but very few of the artists have been able to follow up with satisfying full-length albums. No surprise really - that's the way this sort of stuff has always been. Proper songwriting skills aren't necessary to heat up the dancefloor. Of course there are exceptions (aren't there always?). Firefox AK is easily my favorite, but after spending a couple weeks with Otur's new album "Pepperbox hill", I can recommend her as well. The record suffers a bit for being a touch too long, but there's enough genuinely good songwriting to make up for it. The song I've posted today is surely just as strong as the first two singles and there's more where that came from. Now let's just wait and see if Otur's (aka Emma Bates) old bandmates Christina Roos and Hanna Göransson from Light Bulb Project will fair as well with the new Cat5 album.

Lo-Fi-Fnk Boylife La Vida Locash

Sun, 30 Apr 2006 00:00:00 -0700

I have to be honest, I wasn't that keen on Lo-Fi-Fnk's debut EP "...and the JFG?" that came out last year. Amid brilliant releases from other Swedish "electro duos", such as The Tough Alliance, Three is a crowd, Cat5, and Le Sport (then known as Eurosport), Lo-Fi-Fnk just didn't cut it. Now, with no new TTA material around, a dissapointing album from TIAC, Cat5's album yet to be released, and an album from Le Sport that's got a lot of great songs although I've heard most of them before - "Boylife" comes as a true saviour. The first half of the album is superior to the second, but that's mainly due to starting off with the two magnificent tracks "City" and "Adore". If you're into any of the bands I mentioned above, you should check this one out as well; it's one of my favourites of the year so far.

Cat5's debut full-length album will be out May 17.

Cat5 has left Service for the greener pastures of Stockholm Records and will be releasing the new single "Stretch and Bend" on April 26.

Cat5 Play this loud/Sexy CDS Service

Tue, 06 Sep 2005 00:00:00 -0700

Pretentiousness aside, this is almost a perfect slice of pure (somewhat) subversive pop with sexy lyrics and vocals. They look like a female version of labelmates The Tough Alliance, but their music is much less indie and way more pop. Fun stuff.
