Apparently Canadian-born Richard Reagh has been busy in his little woodland retreat outside Stockholm, creating his own little aural technicolor dreamcoat, sewn together with dozens of little sampler patches from a multitude of sources. Sometimes the resulting pattern is pleasing – Montt Mardié's contribution for "Boo Backe" simply sparkles in sequined brilliance. Sometimes it's a bit garish - I'm not convinced snippets of "Ring my bell" and "Copacabana" really work in an otherwise somber song about war. But it's always interesting. And wisely, he leaves all accessories behind for a sparse, breathless collaboration with El Perro Del Mar on Neil Young's "Hangin' on a limb". If Richard's singing the blues, he's disguised it well among electronic bleeps, squeaks and tinkles to fashion a rather sexy, if not outrageous, little addition to any daring wardrobe.

Let's talk about Sweden's other 20+ member indie choir The Sweptaways. The group's standard repertoire is a capella group versions of pop hits and their debut album "Ooh ahh" is chock-full. It features indie-hits by fellow Swedes Vapnet, El Perro Del Mar, The Embassy and Jenny Wilson (today's featured track) as well as songs from the likes of Kiss, Black Sabbath, Pet Shop Boys and Kate Bush ("Wuthering heights", the first single). Sometimes the formula works, sometimes not. Their take on Sabbath's classic ballad "Changes" is disappointing and a few other song selections were never that good to begin with and are not improved by The Sweptaways vocal treatment. There are many highlights, but I can't help feeling that they are better appreciated as a live act with their fanciful costumes and choreography. A studio recording is a poor substitute. Still, they manage to narrowly avoid status, so that's got to mean something. Oh, and their version of "Silver bells" together with Magnus Carlson and the Gray Brigade (listen here) is fantastic.

With three sold out shows in four days prior to this, her last US dates of the year, anticipation was for a spectacular set by Ms. Sarah Assbring; and it lived up to everyone's expectations. Backed by three musicians (guitar, guitar/bass, and hammond organ) the band brought out sonic elements not present on the record, emphasized by beautiful vocal harmonies and Motown-esque backing vocals. The true highlight though was Sarah's voice. Whenever one goes to a show it is of interest to see how close the singer can replicate the best take that was included on the album and tonight everything was hit, and was hit well. Some of the titles she played included "Candy", "Dog", and "This Loneliness". However, the true gem of the lot was the performance of "I can't talk about it" with the toe-tapping tambourine; and on that rainy (and by that, I mean downpouring) Thursday in New York, it made everyone dance, smile and feel the love of the musician for the music.
