Swedish rapper Embee (Looptroop Rockers) has announced that his second solo album "The mellow turning moment" will be released on February 3, 2010 via Bad Taste Records and Looptroop's own label DVSG. The first single "A day at a time" (feat. Daniel Lemma) will be out later this month and other guests on the album include Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide/Säkert!), Maia Hirasawa, Nikola Sarcevic (Millencolin), Nina Ramsby, Mariam Wallentin (Wildbirds & Peacedrums), Håkan Svensson (Nationalteatern) and Fabian Kallerdahl (Music Music Music).

Promoe's new, still untitled album isn't due out until September, but the new single "Songs of joy" will be out in May. The track is produced by longtime associate Embee and features Jamaican artist Capleton. Promoe went to Jamaica with filmmaker Simon Klose (he also worked on the new Timbuktu DVD) to record and film three guestspots for both the new album and an upcoming DVD.

First off, I need to admit, seeing Timbuktu, Chords, Spotrunnaz and Looptroop in New York City was bound to be special for me. I am sentimentally hung up on Timbuktu and Looptroop since spending springtime in Göteborg this year, right around the time Timbuktu's hit, "Alla Vill Till Himmilen", was owning MTVE and ZTV - a smart and irresistible track ("everyone wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die"), and catching a Looptroop video was just a kick in the head, which all got me thinking how awesome hip-hop and rap can be when you take it out the hands of Puffy and away from American poser conventions; if you're a Swedish rapper, there's just no way you're going to front like you come from Brooklyn or Compton, and just no need. So it's pretty well all about the music.

But the groups playing Joe's Pub after midnight on a Monday blew me away like I never could have expected. The show was a packed, a "VIP"-heavy affair, and mostly attended by Swedes - New Yorkers and friends of the groups who had followed them over to catch this debut. With the end of the year approaching, and me a newly-minted New Yorker myself, the circumstances were just perfect.

All the performers were fantastic, I can say without hesitation, but Timbuktu, with his full live band [ed: Damn!] - including trumpet, trombone, flute, accordion (!!??), bass, guitar, drums - and sharing mic time with Chords, made an impression it would be hard to top. The bulk of the set was in Swedish, but tight rhymes, rhythm, urgency and enthusiasm require no translation, so no good times were lost on the non-Swedish speaking minority in the crowd. They switched over to English for a track in the "Fuck the Police" tradition about corrupt and abusive cops in Malmö (with a special "fuck you" going out to the NYPD - how refreshing!). Another track in English was dedicated to "places we're never going back to" - "We ain't never goin' back to St. Petersburg... We ain't never takin' a ferry to Finland again," followed by a blatant tribute to "Gettin' high high high high high" and "chillin'" with a "spliff in my right hand and a brew in my mouth." Alright you gotta love that. Timbuktu is credited with single-handedly building up a southern dialect Swedish rap tradition, but they've gone and mastered ebonix too. The hit - "Alla Vill..." - was saved for the end. The suspense was killing me. There were nearly tears.

Old school vibe prevailed all night, but Spotrunnaz were the most traditional rap act of the night - two MCs with a DJ, dressed in baggy sweats and baseball caps, trading rhymes in a tight form, and... I'm sorry, I have to admit that I got all distracted during their set by running into Timbuktu out in the hallway, where I got to gush and tell him how special it was to see him live for me and how much I love Sweden, etc. etc., and he was nice as hell about the whole thing. And then suddenly it was Looptroop time, the band I had more eagerly anticipated - expecting big things from dreadlocked madmen (well, just the one guy with the dreads, Promoe, who steals the show, of course). Looptroop delivered, and comparing them with Timbuktu is apples and oranges at this point. The three MCs deftly trading and sharing vocals backed DJ/producer Embee - different setup, different sound. But huge goddamn energy. And at this point I'm drunk, trying snus for my first time and dancing badly. So forgive my lack of details, but honestly, Looptroop blew my mind and had my rapt attention. Suffice to say, this was one of the most enjoyable - not just enjoyable, like, ecstatic, amazing, insane - live shows I've ever seen, ever. Ever. I am thoroughly convinced that these rappers from Sweden bring a better live show (and better recordings) than any of the American superstars could hope to. I like how they take the musical idiom, but they don't have to posture like they gangstas. I am in love with Timbuktu's big band. And Looptroop... well, let's just say I haven't done anything resembling dancing in, like, three years. This was something else, and I really just hope the American takeover these guys are laying groundwork for is truly in sight.

The German Phono Academy recently awarded Norway's Midnight Choir with a best album award in the rock/pop category for the album "Waiting for the Bricks to Fall". The award is given every quarter by "key industry representatives and respected music journalists" and qualifies the band for the album of the year competition.

This year's Nordic Council Music Award will be granted to an ethnic music artist. The nominees who will be competing for the 47k EUR prize:

Sweden's Centinex has announced they will enlist the help of Per Gustafson from Cult of Luna to do the artwork on their new CD "Decadence - Prophecies Of Cosmic Chaos". Timo "The Eyeless" Ketola will handle the layout. Recording begins June 23 at Black Lounge Studios and they expect to have it sometime in October on Candlelight Records.

Cult of Luna reports that they have a new drummer - Thomas from The Perishers. I can't confirm it for sure, but my assumption is that Marco Hildén has accepted a permanent position with Logh and moved on. In case you didn't know, Marco has been filling in for them since their drummer Kristofer left recently mid-tour. As reported earlier, Cult of Luna just recently completed work on a new video and is now putting together plans for a full European tour this fall. Details when I get 'em.

Johan Bergqvist reports he has finished up shooting the video for his new single "This Could Be Our Time". And if you look to your right you'll see that you can download an exclusive mp3 of the track right now. But yeah, the video's done and the CD is being sent off to get mastered, so it's on track for its May release. Johan's also got plans for yet another video - on April 26 he's off to shoot one for the song "Lovelace" as he says he "found a nice location with a grand piano." I'll keep you posted.

Lukas has reportedly helped out with some lyric writing while Radio Dept. and Magnus played together at their home in Malmö. Stickman Records reports that Motorpsycho has US and Japan tour plans in the works. No dates yet, but I'll keep you posted. The label also has revealed the title for the forthcoming Isolation Years record: "It's Golden". Again, no date yet, but I'll let you know.

Amorphis is working on mixing their new album with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Moonspell, Sentenced) at Finnvox Studios. They expect to finished by the end of the month. No word yet on a new label for the band.

Keep your eyes on Norweigen electronic act Röyksopp as they're touring seven US cities in March. European sales are already climbing and accolades are accumulating, but they've yet to catch on fully over here. Will they break? Hype sure is building.

In a sign of potentially bigger things to come, booking agency Luger has now taken on the band Paris. Is the return of new-wave nigh?

DJ Embee (Loop Troop) is currently finishing up work on his new EP with Organism 12 and PSTQ. Four tracks and instruments, two produced by Embee, two by Breakmecanix. Look for it around late February or early March on JuJu Records.

Also from JuJu is the new Timbuk/Promoe (also Loop Troop) "Blind Justice" 12". It comes out on the 27th.

Darkthrone will be adding exclusive new film footage to the Peaceville CDrom reissues of four of their old albums. As for what the footage will contain, here's what they had to say:

Fenriz and Nocturno Culto will film many hours at their stronghold somewhere in the wilderness in Norway. Like a reality-Darkthrone documentary. Every of the four album will contain at least 5 minutes of this rare piece of filming. They will drink, drink, listen to music, drink etc.....many things will be revealed. They will also interview eachother about all the Peaceville-albums. They will film that much, so it can edited to be a 30 min. documentary

Classic Swedish deathmetal band Dismember is currently working on their next album. The title is "Where Ironcrosses Grow" and it's due out around September on Hammerheart Records. Produced once again by drummer Fred Estby with help from engineer Olle Sandqvist, the new material is described as "darker, a little less melodic and more aggressive than ever" and lyrically "headed even more in the direction of describing war at its ugliest, stories about sick minds creating sick situations and loads of religious criticism."
