As with "When the deer wore blue", the dreamy echoes of '60s pop continue on through Figurines' self-titled release, coloring the album in nostalgic, sun-bleached tones and textures and casting strange shadows across their music. As fans of the band have come to expect, the swells of the compositions, both with respect to instrumentation and emotion, are layered and intricate, but not inaccessible or pretentious. The bright, clean production is subtly subverted by pop songs that are not reliant on guitar or vocal hooks, and tracks that evoke a summery feel often turn from the sun to explore the shade created by so much light -- "Have you always been someone that you've never been?" This perspective does not feel staged, as if the songs were deliberately crafted to include funhouse mirrors distorting the images reflecting back out of the music -- there is a natural, effortless flow to the compositions, even when a track turns corners that, at first, take the listener by surprise. On "We got away", what opens as a "Pet sounds"-inspired track evolves into something else: a love song that feels distanced from its central premise, and painfully aware of this detachment, as the subtle, clever refrain "I love her like a lover should love her" suggests. There is something this band brings to the table that so many other acts just cannot, an originality that is hard to pin down, but is nonetheless on full display on "Figurines".

The press release tries to talk things up for this Danish band. The big drum is beaten on when Bahnhof is compared to internationally acknowledged Danish bands like The Raveonettes, Mew and Figurines and the comparison is correct when it comes to their nationalities. It\'s not correct musically. The band dresses well in the so typically Danish rock costume of today, where the influences are the 80\'s, Interpol and OMD. And that kind of gives me a feeling of saturation. Fed up with the lack of originality and fed up with the lack of songs. Ah yes, the songs. Sure, there are highlights in \"The eyes of Ruby\" and the single \"Call the police\" where the music is highly dominated by synthesizers which give the band a push forward and a reminiscence of Duran Duran! If they had the guts to head that direction, a lot more would have been won. Connecting with the beginning, a comparison with fellow countrymen in Kashmir is a tad more in its place. It\'s as equally transparent and boring. And anonymous.

Any record that starts off asking, \"Would you trade a dysfunctional kidney for a broken heart?\" has my immediate attention. As far as opening tracks go, Herr Nilsson put an inspiring foot forwards with \"Camera for an eye\", a tune whose competence and peculiar drive brings \"Downhill thrill\" completely alive and kick-starts its strange exploration. While comparable in many ways to Shout Out Louds and Figurines, and quite prone to the unusual bursts of energy that endear Laakso to their fans, Herr Nilsson are almost a distillation of everything that makes quirky Scandinavian pop so damned appealing. Title track \"Downhill thrill\" dances a little into Of Montreal\'s territory in its midsection before sealing the deal with thin guitar chords, building strings, and anthemic lyrics. It was \"Huskies\", though, that completely won me over, four tracks into a record I was already stirred by. \"Downhill thrill\" does meander into more bizarre terrain as it reaches its conclusion, quite markedly during the Beatles-esque, Consciousness Expansion-era duo \"On the road again\" and \"Killerbee\", but overall it is yet more proof that the Scandinavian music gods have smiled fondly upon 2007.

It was "Huskies", though, that completely won me over, four tracks into a record I was already stirred by. "Downhill thrill" does meander into more bizarre terrain as it reaches its conclusion, quite markedly during the Beatles-esque, Consciousness Expansion-era duo "On the road again" and "Killerbee", but overall it is yet more proof that the Scandinavian music gods have smiled fondly upon 2007.

Leütenhaven are full of surprises. Their debut EP opens with a droning art piece reminiscent of The Giant's Dream which then gives way to sharp indiepop anchored by a tight rhythm section and mantra-like vocals. "Still life (trompe l'oeil)" seems straightforward as first, but as the name suggests, not all is what it seems. Three chords and an endless refrain? Not quite. The steady strum of the guitar is a red herring. Listen carefully and you'll hear new harmonies appear as the background shifts in subtle ways. Are those voices real or are they samples? Does it matter? Should we be concerned with each individual element or concentrate on the end result? What's the proper vantage? From my point of view, I find this song to be a sublime, but tricky work of pop art. Leütenhaven lies somewhere between the anxious, overreaching epic-ness of Arcade Fire and the steady workmanship of the Figurines, a melding of craft and inspiration. Unexpected, but welcome.

Autumn is my favorite season, though it has not always been the kindest one. With the days growing shorter and colder, and with summer bleeding out so beautifully in the yellows, oranges, and reds of the decaying leaves, I often find myself looking inwards and backwards over the past year, examining its successes and failures, and tallying up all of those missed opportunities and regretted memories. Some years this is a more difficult process than others. The future seems much further off with scarves wrapped around our necks and layers of clothing attempting the stave off the sharp teeth of impending winter. These are the times when music becomes necessary for our mental stability and survival, and can assist in properly facilitating and strengthening those introspective rambles into the layers of experience that make us the individuals we are. The end of the year is indeed a good time to take stock of where we are. By doing so we increase the likelihood that once spring hits, we know where we want to go as the momentum of another year starts up. And what medium better to guide our hands than music, specifically creations from the Scandinavian states - a people who know all too well the darkness of autumn and winter.

While my first winters in Stockholm were difficult - those first days of near perpetual darkness, combined with the cold and quiet, the snow absorbing so much of life's clamor - they pale in the face of what the robust souls of Norrland face every year. This might be why there is such presence to their music in these festering months of a lost year.

The Bear Quartet have quite the catalog to peruse in these moments, though I'd probably fall into "Angry brigade" and "Personality crisis" at this early stage of the decay, saving "Gay icon" for when summer becomes something that is coming, not a string of events that have just passed. "Vi kommer att d samtidigt" from Skert!'s self-titled album will also help bridge that twilight period between autumn and winter.

The Perishers' "Let there be morning", and even this year's "Victorious", will funnel themselves into my headphones as October overtakes my present and the sun starts to ignore this northern hemisphere. "My heart" and "Come out of the shade" are near perfect examples of songs that traverse those strange corridors between hope lost and hope rediscovered. Compositions like these thrive as winter's influence starts to win out over the summer's optimism and as life slows to a less frantic pace. Upbeat melodies will fit certain days of chilly sunlight, but building landscapes of softer tones and less buoyant themes seem more apt as calendars reach the end of their tenure on our walls.

And while I am not as familiar with groups like KVLR, Isolation Years, Fireside, and Carpet People, the tracks I have heard present further evidence of Norrland's artists' ability to purposefully color the passing moments of autumn and winter. But, bands from Sweden's more populated south are not to be ignored.

"Howl howl gaff gaff" has a few tracks that fit the coming months, but the Shout Out Louds' sophomore effort "Our ill wills" has the malleability to be just as relevant in November as it was for me in May, and will easily survive in its relevance as 2008 comes more clearly into focus. "Normandie", "You are dreaming", and "Impossible" have risen to the upper echelons of my favorite Scandinavian compositions, exemplifying that strange exploration of loss and potential salvation that Scandinavian musicians have perfected over the past few decades.

While I enjoy this year's "Mother, am I good looking?", and agree that it has some of Laakso's best material to date (especially "Worst case scenario" and "Norrkping"), it is "My gods" that is the more solid and focused record overall, a record that constantly unveils new strata, especially when viewed through the different lenses provided by shifting phases of the year, and thematically more compatible with the liminal period of cold and darkness before next year's thaw.

Kent have a plethora of songs that fit well into any autumn playlist, and their seventh studio album "Tillbaka till samtiden" is due out October 19. Jens Lekman's most recent effort will undeniably play some role in distracting me from the cooler temperatures and from my own pressing concerns. And pushing from Sweden into Denmark, The Kissaway Trail's striking debut album will gather some inertia as yellow and brown leaves cover the once green lawns of our neighborhoods, CS Nielsen's leading effort will take on a slightly heartbreaking tone, and I've never been one to dismiss Figurines' ability to bring a little cheer into the gloomiest moments.

This list could go on for quite some time, which quite succinctly sums up the state of Scandinavian music, especially compared to more populated countries such as America, Canada and Great Britain. I never even got to touch upon Norway's or Finland's musical contributions, and could probably create an entire column devoted to that one purpose alone, nor was I really able to go into much depth or cover all the bands I'd have liked to.

Many things become less cheerful as the year becomes less of a youthful cry and more of an echo, but there are soundtracks to elevate us above these dark currents, or allow us to plunge fully into them - and a sickening number of the most powerful of these are created in Scandinavia. There is a great deal of hope to be taken from that statement, more than enough to get me through until next spring.

Denmark\'s Death By Kite have the unique ability to exude all the confidence of influences Placebo, Mew, and Sonic Youth, whilst simultaneously enjoying a degree of forgiveness afforded by their youthful energy and honest approach. The end result is a record that feels at once familiar and novel, both responses enhanced by their diacritically juxtaposed counterparts. There\'s a strangely nostalgic quality to the music, fashioned from the band\'s influences and the lo-fi production, that also adds yet another touch of authority to Death By Kite\'s self-titled effort. If you\'ve been looking for a record drenched in delayed guitars and vocals reminiscent of Brian Molkos\' delivery, that concurrently radiates a record overlooked in the late 90s and an album combining the dirtier approaches of contemporary bands like Figurines with the wonderfully dark musings of Joy Division... look little further.
At a cursory glance, Death By Kite seems an awful lot like countrymates Figurines. A hyperactive, lock-step rhythm section; frenetic, jangly guitars; a squeaky, androgynous frontman. That is until the layers of delay start overlapping, turning the guitars into a shimmering beast and then you realize that, hey - those lyrics are quite a bit darker than anything you've heard from those other Danes. "Your love is a scar on my glass marble-eyes / It forces me to always keep you in sight / I cut myself quite severely / Blood and flesh filled the city I live in" and so on. And that's tame compared to some of the other suicidal musings on the record. Death By Kite puts noise catharsis to good use as therapy. Get it out, feel better.

Like labelmates Figurines, Oceano da Cruz plays the kind of by-the-numbers indierock that'll probably remind you of so many other artists. But also like Figurines, Oceano da Cruz does it with a certain level of finesse that makes them far superior to most of other dreck out there. So while it's not terribly original, it's charming, well-played and well-written. What more do you need? The new CD "Rocksploitation/No more Oceanomania..." is actually a double-album, so it runs a bit long for a single sitting, but if you break it up either by using the convoluted directions in the hard-to-read liner notes or splitting it in half down the middle, it's quite satisfying. Usually I'm all about artists trying to push boundaries and expand musical horizons, but there's something to be said for someone that can make well-tread territory sound fresh. Actually, that's often far more difficult.

It's always exciting to see an unproven band play their first show on US soil and Denmark's Figurines were no exception. Despite numerous delays and distractions from well-wishers, I was able to finally pin frontman Christian Hjelm down for a short interview following their debutante performance at Seattle's Crocodile Club. I know it's not much, but at least it's something.
- Avi Roig

AR: Good show! So, how do feel it went?
CH: I feel pretty good, I think it was fun.

AR: Tour's going okay? Have you been reading any of the press you've gotten?
CH: Yeah, I feel good 'cuz the stuff I've been reading has been pretty good.

AR: Do think they're getting it?
CH: Yeah, I think... I don't know. I mean, it's our first time here. The first time we have an album out here. So far the press I've reading, the reviews have been very positive. I think that's cool - it's a good start for a band like us that's not from around here. I think reviews and good press and stuff like that, I think it's important for a band like to even be noticed. If they get it or not, I don't know. I'm not sure.

AR: I see a lot of reviews comparing you to Modest Mouse, The Shins. Do you think that is true, that it's valid?
CH: I've heard so many bands in the reviews compared to us. I've heard Modest Mouse, Velvet Undergound, Shins, Pixes, Sebadoh... just like tons of bands. I've heard Neil Young, The Strokes...

AR: All over the map!
CH: It's funny. I just thought it was funny. I guess we have a bit of everything in a way and just create our own thing. I think that's how it is for all bands, all the music you listen you to your life. Just trying to give something back, you know?

AR: What are your main influences?
CH: Main influence? I dunno. My record player has been broken for over half a year now. I've been listening to a lot of Beach Boys actually.

AR: So what first inspired you to pick up the guitar and start playing?
CH: It was Creedence Clearwater Revival. That was when I was like 12 years-old. That was why I started playing guitar.

AR: So how has the response been so far? Is it different from when you were starting out back home in Denmark?
CH: I don't want to compare because in Europe we're at a completely different level. We're starting from the bottom and we've tried that before. It's hard work. We know that, we're not naive. It's touring, positive reviews, airplay... you know? A lot of factors that need to add up.

AR: What do think that you do that makes you different and helps you get ahead?
CH: I'm not sure, it always hard to tell with your own music.

AR: So then, what do you think you have to offer to the world?
CH: A tight-played band with some good melodies and a good vibe. We're doing what we think is right and we hope that people like it. That's cool. If they don't, it's a shame. They are missing out.

AR: What's next for you then?
CH: Well, we have this tour here. Then we are going to play some gigs back home. And then we're gonna do some demos for the next album and then we're gonna come back to the US for three weeks during the summer. I think we're probably going to start recording like probably late fall and probably release spring 2007.

AR: Do you already have songs put together?
CH: Yeah, I have a lot of ideas. I've been working on songs since we were done recording "Skeleton". I'm excited about it.

The weather last night was far from perfect, but I still made the long drive up to Seattle to see Figurines. Kira and one of the Kindred Spirits had visa issues, so no other Danish acts made the bill though the remainder of the band was still in attendance. After a shambling, mediocre set from locals The Elephants, Figurines took the stage and did their thing. Let me tell you, that band is a well-oiled machine. They are a great example of what a tight band should sound like. After quietly opening with "Back in the day", they set into "The wonder" (today's mp3) and were off and running. Drummer Kristian Volden laid down a strong four-on-the-floor backbeat and joyfully sang along to himself with every song while frontman Christian Hjelm proved to be a manic, energetic frontman. The other two guys in the band (guitarist Claus Johansen and bassist Andreas Toft) were much more nondescript, but they did their job and did it well. I'm a little disappointed they had an extra musician on stage playing guitar, keyboard and percussion to help them perfectly replicate their album, but since he didn't distract from the overall experience, it's kind of a moot point. I feel that a rawer live sound would have benefitted them. Anyhow, it was a very good set and I think the audience appreciated it. A few of the midtempo songs dragged a bit due to the crowd's lack of familiarity with the material, but the fast songs caught their attention and the two slower numbers ("Silver ponds" and "Rivalry") were very engaging. The band plays Portland tonight, goes back to Seattle this weekend for a radio appearance and an in-store then travels to LA and SXSW. Look for them to be back this summer. My short interview with Christian should hopefully be online sometime this weekend.

I'm not sure what my problem is, but I've only just recently started to really dig into the Morningside Records catalogue. I've known about the label for awhile now, but never bothered getting a hold of any of their releases until Figurines started to get international attention. Lame, I know. However, I'm not going to talk about Figurines today (I'll wait until after I see them in Seattle next week). The Morningside artist that has impressed me the most so far is Jomi Massage, so that's who I'm posting an mp3 from today. The most obvious point of reference for JM is "Dry"-era PJ Harvey. You know the sound: caterwauling vocals and noisy, lurching rock interspersed with quieter, more tender moments. But JM trumps PJ by incorporating a much diverse and layered melodic sensibility. I like older PJ stuff a lot, but there's something more interesting going on here that's also, most importantly, much more consistent. This particular track that I've posted today starts off with a droning melody and then explodes into a fireball of white noise which keeps burning furiously until a sudden stop at the end. It's a total cliffhanger of a song, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
