Last Days of April - America (video)

Can't say that I love the latest Last Days of April album "Gooey", but this single is a total keeper. The pedal steel seals the deal. Direct link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_z2n0uV_h0

MP3: The Gentle Act Incident - This city doesn't know me

Two of my biggest weaknesses: 1) well-played emo-pop and 2) songs that recall a certain (time and) place. "This city doesn't know me" could be about anywhere -- it's not specific at all -- but I find comfort in thinking that it's about The Gentle Act Incident's hometown of Göteborg. It's an age-old story, being lost in the urban wasteland, and one that I know well. I left, I'm much happier for it, but I do miss it. Spending last weekend in NYC for CMJ made me feel like a relapsed junkie. As for the emo-pop side of this, I hold all comers up to Jimmy Eat World's "Bleed American", a perfect example of emotional hardcore/pop music, and The Gentle Act Incident definitely swims in similar waters. The shadow of Sunny Day Real Estate is immediately apparently and further perusing of their influence list yields acts such as Last Days of April and Texas is the Reason; that seals the deal. There's no shame though, despite what you may think when you hear that 3-letter word, at least not in my world. I hear a bit of The Book of Daniel too, but that could also be geographical proximity rearing its head. Anyway, if you like hooky indierock, it all came from more or less the same place way back when. Draw lines, keep score, you'll figure it out. Besides, as I like to say, good music is good music and this is good music. Catchy melodies come in all sorts of packaging.

Immanu El recording new album, planning fall tour

Swedish postrock act Immanu El will be going into the studio with Kristian Karlsson (Pg.Lost, Last Days Of April, Eskju Divine, etc.) in mid-June to record their 2nd full-length album "Moen". Expect a release this coming fall via And the Sound Records preceded by a Northern European tour in late August.

MP3: We are the Storm - Where we used to be heroes

We are the Storm resent being labelled emo and I can't say I blame them, but I gotta call 'em like I see 'em. Obviously they don't want to be lumped in with modern neon/hairband travesties like Brokencyde or even Panic & Action's artist roster, but that stuff isn't emo to me. I'm using the term in a more old-fashioned sense, meant to conjure memories of bands like Embrace or Fugazi, or as in We are the Storm's particular case, the 90s Midwest scene with acts such as Promise Ring, Texas is the Reason and so on, bands that they actually own up to liking. I'm not much of a Sunny Day Real Estate fan myself, but admitting their influence is hardly an embarrassment. This is emphatic rock music with ambitions of grandeur. "Where we used to be heroes" is more than a Broder Daniel homage, it also incorporates the sounds of bands such as Last Days of April or Sounds Like Violence. It's a strong debut, so all I can say is: keep singing your heart out. It's working.

As mentioned before, the band's entire EP is available for free download here.
