Powerfully starting with "Iloitkaamme Hawaii", Mikko Singh draws you in... and then nearly lets you slip away. The production changes, the delivery, too, and all the sudden a wonderful instrumental track bleeds into a strange acoustic number with lo-fi strings and what sounds like waves crashing (though this could just be a facet of the lower quality production) in the background. The first track feels like it could have been featured on the "True Romance" soundtrack, the next feels more like a choice for a quirky, low-budget indie film, and doesn't really challenge the listener with its repetitive tact. Luckily, Mikko recovers, especially once he hits on "Palmun juurella", a similar track to that of the opener, though this time accompanied by Singh's fragile, though assertive vocals. From there on out it's pretty smooth sailing, even if lost at sea in arrangements akin to that of dreamscape pioneers Sigur Rós and the Notwist, touches of José González noticeable in the competent guitar lines, and an almost Peter Gabriel-esque quality perceptible at times. While "Illalla nukutaan aamu on" has a quick stumble in the important opening section, its creator easily convalesces, and the final product is quite an accomplishment.

MP3: Will Gambola Sing - Space is a strange place

Will Gambola Sing boasts a pretty amazing pedigree. They've got John Roger Olsson of IAT.MP3 artists The Grand Opening plus Jimmy Ottosson/Jimmy O of The Je Ne Sais Quoi, solo artist Mikko Singh, Joakim Labraaten of Yamon Yamon (another promising act) and Anders Ljung of Ohm. Considering the members other acts, it's not surprising that they make incredibly lush, dreamy pop music, but it is also kind of disappointing that they've decided to forego and keep it purely instrumental. What gives dudes? You've got more than one talented vocalist among you, so I wanna hear some beautiful harmonies. Aside from that one awfully minor complaint, this is some nice stuff, especially for what I imagine would be regarded as a demo. The songs and the playing is fantastic, the arrangements make great use of space and the recording sounds excellent. Definitely looking forward to hearing more down the road!

A lot of recordings get filed under the banner "dreampop," but the word is perfectly apt for this offering from Mikko Singh. It's a soft, shimmering collection of ambience-laced tunes that showcase Singh's impossibly fragile, high-pitched voice. His singing suits these wintery, ethereal compositions, which often sound like they're dancing with the snowflakes Tomita told us about years ago. Mikko has a good ear for melody and the blend of acoustic instrumentation and feathery electronica here is consistently pleasing, although it starts sounding a bit samey after awhile. There's also an innocent optimism at work throughout the disc, although the classic Nordic melancholy also pervades. It makes for an effective contrast. All in all, a most impressive debut.

MP3: Mikko Singh - Rauha

I do love me some dreamy pop music. It should be obvious by now, but I'm gonna throw that declaration out there again just in case. Much of the best music I've heard this year has been of the dreampop variety and singer/songwriter Mikko Singh is another fine addition to the canon. From gentle fingerpicking accompanied by whispery vocals to drawn out atmospheric instrumentals with electronic beats, Mikko does it all, exceptionally well I might add. What's even more impressive is that his debut album "Näin elämän suuruuden" is a strictly DIY affair. The recording, the graphics, everything. Imagine if he actually had a budget to work with and you know the result would be amazing. Download the song I've posted today and listen to a few more at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mikkosingh
