MP3: Moneybrother - Jag skriver inte på nåt

As I'm sure a lot of you know by now, Moneybrother just released a new album called "Pengabrorsan" featuring Swedish versions of all sorts of various cover tunes. I was mighty tempted to post the Operation Ivy cover of "Freeze up" (here titled "Det blir ingen dans") since the band is so near and dear to my heart, especially having grown up around the East Bay punk scene. They were one of the very first punk bands I ever heard and, while I never got to see them myself (I was too young at time for my parents to let me venture off to Gilman St., though I did manage to sneak in one Green Day show at age 13), I regularly saw all the ex-members around town and their bands (Rancid, Schlong, Common Rider, etc.). However, and this is what it all comes down to, the track just isn't that hot and even a guest appearance from Howlin' Pelle does little to redeem it. On the other hand, Moneybrother wisely chose to cover Wire, my second-favorite band of all time just behind the almighty Black Sabbath (yes, two English bands but that's a discussion for another time). Moneybrother's take on "Mannequin" (here billed as "Jag skriver inte på nåt") doesn't stray far from the original besides the translated lyrics, but I'm okay with it since it's such a great selection. You won't need to know Swedish to join in with the la-la refrain at the end.
(note: I've seen some incongruous tracklistings for "Pengabrorsan", so if I got the titles wrong, I apologize)

Moneybrother
Dom vet ingenting om oss
Hacka Skivindustri

This is a cover of Kirsty MacColl's "They don't know" from 1979 (also recorded by Tracy Ullman in 1983 in a crazy pop version), translated and sung in Swedish. It's the first single from Moneybrother's forthcoming album, consisting of only covers, all translated to Swedish. It's a fun and catchy song, and it very much sounds like Moneybrother. Don't listen to it too many times though, since it'll get inside your head and it's going to be very hard to forget about it. If you want to live dangerously, you can listen to the song on Moneybrother's website or watch the very lo-fi video on youtube.

Moneybrother will be releasing a new album of cover tunes sung in Swedish next month. The record is called "Pengabrorsan" and the official release date is December 6 via Hacka Skivindustri (what happened to BHR?) with the first single "Dom vet ingenting om oss" being posted for streaming at moneybrother.net tomorrow. Some of the artists covered include Donna Summer, Operation Ivy, My Morning Jackets and Otis Clay and there are duets with both Jerry Williams and Howlin' Pelle (The Hives).

Last night my head tried to explode and I wrote everything down
Novoton

Most of you know Existensminimum as the drummer of Moneybrother, and you, like myself, had probably heard the first version of "Running down everyone" over a year ago as a single. With that song, one could see parallels with the two group. Those parallels are have know been extinguished. What Existensminimum has now given us is a stellar experimental/noise/pop/psychadelica record that rips and tears and lilts and flies with each track. The segments of each song interweave with themselves, layering instruments and loads of texture. He suceeds greatly, as none of the tracks are cluttered, and each sound gives way to another. Tracks with vocals, the afformentioned "Running down everyone" (although substantially different now from the older version) and "Cina" hit the listener with hooks. "Sweden" is a true gem, a subtle, delicate number that explodes with vocals chaos towards the end. Existensminimum has created a top-notch debut, and I cannot wait to see what's next.

MP3: Existensminimum - Changing lines

The new Existensminimum album with the long, clumsy title "Last night my head tried to explode and I wrote everything down" surprised me. I didn't have a lot of expectations, but I never imagined that it would end up to be such a lush pop symphony. I suppose it makes perfect sense since Existensminimum mainman Magnus Henriksson made a name for himself as an engineer and producer before releasing this debut solo album. (He's also well-known for being Moneybrother's live drummer, but that's less important in this context) I know that the single "Changing lines" has already been circulated a bit, but it makes sense as the track immediately jumps out with its strong, soaring melodies and driving bass line. The rest of the record is less straightforward and more sonically adventurous, so it's a bit tougher to pick outstanding moments. I think that's a good thing though - it proves the music has lasting value. There's a ton of earcandy to absorb, so grab your headphones and dig in.

Hets
Live @ Debaser, Stockholm, 04/22/06

Hets are something of a Swedish indie "supergroup", with members from Laakso, Doktor Kosmos, Fireside and Moneybrother. With those bands in mind, you don't really expect Hets to play Swedish punk sung in Swedish, but that's exactly what they do. Everyone seems to mention Mattias Alkberg BD when they talk about Hets and I can see why, since Hets do sound like MABD (although I don't think MABD should be the only people allowed to make punk music sung in their native language). Living in London, it's not every day I get to witness a concert like this, so perhaps I'm overreacting slightly, but I really enjoyed this show and I think I will now look into getting my hands on Hets' album (I assume and hope that the punk ethos is reflected in the price of their CD).

As mentioned before, the band features Markus Krunegård (Laakso), Per Nordmark (Fireside), Henrik Svensson (Moneybrother) and Christoffer Roth (Monster).
