MP3: Montys Loco - Criminal

I'm bored with new music but since we oh-so-conveniently just passed 2008's halfway mark, I figure it's a perfect time to revisit some of my favorite releases of the year thus far. Hopefully I've harped on about Lukestar enough already for you to get the point (and the album, dammit!), so let's talk about Montys Loco. As I mentioned before, I love their pseudo-industrial pop sound, but even more, I love their attitude. I've spent a huge amount of time this year getting down with all sorts of bad-vibes hardcore and while I love that stuff, I can feel myself turning into a knuckle-dragger the deeper I get into it. It's a scene that's ripe with machismo, so it's incredibly refreshing to hear similar negative emotions from the fairer sex. Face it, women have every right to be just as pissed, if not moreso, it's just rarer that we get to hear it, especially outside of a hardcore/metal context. Loud guitars? Bah! Who needs em? I rather have off-kilter drum loops and clanging metal percussion for variety's sake. Anyone can recycle post-"Damaged" Black Flag riffs. This is something else entirely.

MP3: Marybell Katastrophy - Hidden agenda

Listening to new music from Montys Loco and Marybell Katastrophy has me thinking that there's some sort of covert industrial revolution going on. It's not explicit, but all of these ladies put out the same dark, metallic vibe that I associate with that genre. Few (if any) guitars, lots of clanging percussion, etc. Montys Loco goes at in a more bare-bones sorta way ala Babyland (oh, if ever the two should meet!) while Marybell Katastrophy is far more electronically composed, but the similarities are definitely there. I'd even venture to say that her sound design is on par with Skinny Puppy, it's that rich and complex. Even better, they eschew the many bad aspects of the genre. I attribute that somewhat to their femininity (something that's sorely lacking in industrial), but I also simply think that they are smart enough to see through the bullshit. Simple as that.

Anyhow, Marybell Katastrophy's new EP "You are the two" is out today and I have the single "Hidden agenda" for you. It's a beautifully twisted piece of pop, just as with her previous material, but I also think it shows significant progression. She's expanding her sonic palette, but never at the expense of her songwriting. Actually, considering the EP as a whole, she's far more consistently good. Definitely add this one to my best-of list.

MP3: Montys Loco - Farwell Mr Happy

The new Montys Loco album is a stunner, especially lead single/title track "Farewell Mr Happy". The duo's mix of loops + samples has gotten more complex, but they also retain an elegant minimalism not too far off from Björn Yttling's best work. Guitars? Bah, who needs 'em. There's a weird industrial vibe too, something that reminds me a bit of Chris Connelly's early solo material. At least that's the only comparison that comes to mind because, as far as contemporaries go, there are none. It's pop in essence, to be sure, but it also has those pounding drums and a raw, almost sinister air. The longer the song goes on, the more is revealed, the angrier it gets. Definitely not love, no way. Also: definitely one of the year's best releases so far.
