"Reader's companion" alumni Paris have temporarily revamped their website to announce the release of their new album: http://www.parismusic.se/
The first single "When I laid my eyes on you" is out now and can be heard on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/parissthlm

"Reader's companion" alumni Paris are currently wrapping up their third album for release this coming August. Look for the first single "When I laid my eyes on you" to be released soon.

Swedish synth/indiepop act Paris will be going into the studio on March 19 to begin work on their third album.

MP3: Emmon - Wake up time

Paris frontwoman Emma Nylén has been working on solo music and DJing under the name Emmon for awhile now, but it was only recently that she signed with Wonderland Records and released her proper debut single "Wake up time". If you're familiar with Paris (maybe you heard their track on "Reader's companion volume two"?), Emmon's music won't be a big surprise. The only real difference is that instead of it being synth-heavy, new-wavey pop, it's all synth/all the time now. It's just as catchy, too. I was kind of hoping that "Wake up time" would be a bit more of a barn-burner, especially considering the title and lead single status, but alas it was not meant to be. It's good, but more in a nice and pleasant sort of way. I wanted set-your-feet-on-fire. Still, there's always hope that someone will crank out a banging remix as I imagine that adding a little oomph to the kick along with pushing up the BPMs could do a lot of good. The Thermostatic remix on the single comes mighty damn close, but it's not quite there. On the other hand, the Helm downbeat remix takes things in the complete opposite direction, stretching it out and transforming it into a languid power-ballad. That's kinda hot too, but for entirely different reasons. Some days I find I actually prefer the latter, but it's not the sort of thing I'd put out as the first single. Second single, maybe.

I guess we'll always have Paris. That is, bands LIKE Paris that are pretty good, pretty talented, pretty nice to listen to, but somehow a little less than transcendent. This Swedish quartet have made a second album that would be the envy of many lesser bands. The rhythm section is crack, and Annika's pipes are pleasing if sorta rote. Tunes alternate between ringing indie rock ala Elastica, Ladytron and a few others, and Annie-esque dance-pop like "60 minutes" and "Ladies man." And I dig the chiming guitars and retro-delica feel of "Something has to be done" very much. It all sounds dandy on the car stereo as you're zipping down the road, but I don't know...I just wasn't moved by Paris much. The down side of there being so many superb bands in Sweden is that you can be a perfectly fine little outfit, but if you don't have that extra edge, you suffer by comparison. And I just don't hear the edge in this band...not yet. Still better than lots of similar British and American bands, though. Maybe it'll be a grower, we'll see...

I'm kind of surprised I don't hear more people talking about Paris. I'd figure that even the slightest PR push would ensure that their infectious Blondie-esque new-wave sound finds a ready and willing audience. It certainly doesn't hurt that the band is quite easy on the eyes as well. I know I've been a fan ever since I first heard them and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of their second album, the recently released "Secrets on tape". Granted, it's not much of a departure from the first record, but why complain? I'm always eager for more clever, catchy pop like this. Today's mp3 posting is one of the more upbeat, dance-friendly numbers. I just love the way that the verse slowly builds into that huge chorus. That little dip in the vocals just before everything opens up is just fantastic. You know exactly what's coming next, but the tension of those transition chords make it so much better. Beautifully done.
