New Pistol Disco now confirmed for June 25

The new Pistol Disco album "Evergreen" now has an official release date: June 25.

MP3: Volcanic Places - Goo

"Goo" by Volcanic Places is almost entirely self-descriptive. This is slow, oozing pop buried under layers of crackle and distortion, like the sound of Suicide gone up in flames. Sometimes willful lo-fi-ness can be a put-on, but the sizzle adds extra nuance and overtones in this case -- without it, the song would almost be too much too take. Besides, they sound way too down and out for that kind of cold confrontationism.

I know nothing about this band except that like-minded noiseniks Pistol Disco are listed in their top friends. Related? I wouldn't doubt it, but I choose to remain willfully ignorant.

Recommended, as always.

MP3: They Live - My favorit color is gold

They Live is the solo project of one of the guys from Pistol Disco, so that fact alone should give you a good idea of what to expect. No, not half as good, just half as noisy. Think: streamlined. You still get the same electro-Kraut mindmelt, but the overall effect is relaxed hypnosis as opposed to total white-noise amnesia. Early Days' drug music hearkens back to a more innocent time of free love and posi vibes, this stuff is more concerned with present day consciousness obliteration. If you've been reading the news recently and want to stop the ride to get off, here's a five-and-a-half minute breather. Not quite nihilism, just annihilation.

MP3: Agent Side Grinder - Lashes of flashes

I've mentioned Swedish minimal synth/industrial act Agent Side Grinder a few times in passing, most prominently in the very first edition of the MyFriends column series, but now that I've got a few copies of their self-titled LP in the distro, I figure it's time for a proper mp3 post. For genre aficionados, you know the drill - this is classic industrial pop the way it used to be played: purely manual. No laptops or fancy sequencers, rather they use real tape loops and analog synths working together in concert, in real time. If you dig stuff like Suicide or DAF or even newcomers such as Pistol Disco, you know what I'm talking about. It's cold and repetitive, dark and dreary in the best possible way. "Lashes of flashes" has it all, including the heavy, clattering percussion that makes it dancefloor-friendly to boot. If I had a DJ night somewhere, you know I'd be spinning that one for sure. So yeah, check it out! Hopefully I'm not the only one excited about getting a copy of this vinyl-only release on import.

Agent Side Grinder - Lashes of flashes

Pistol Disco's upcoming album "Evergreen" will be released later this year via Celebrity Lifestyle Records and will be available either on 12" vinyl or as a free digital download. Look for new remixes from them for artists such as Ikons and Maria in the near future as well.

Airwaves Music will be putting on their 2nd annual Krautrock festival in Stockholm on May 23. German masters Faust headline and they've also got IAT-tipped favorites Pistol Disco and Ikons on as support. More info: http://www.airwavesmusic.com/krautrocksthlm2008/
