MP3: Powersolo - Pirates of the oblivion

Tue, 17 Mar 2009 11:09:29 -0700

As a media partner for that "Danish Dynamite" SXSW showcase on Friday, March 20 (see the banner on the right), it is my duty to tell you at least a little bit about some of the bands playing, so I'll do my best to touch on a few highlights throughout the week. Picking a favorite however, is easy. Powersolo's weirdo hillbilly twang has kept me entertained for many years now and this must be their 2nd or 3rd trip to SXSW, but they've yet to truly break and I'm thinking it's gotta happen eventually. Perhaps this might be the year? They're certainly stepping off on the right foot because "Pirates of the oblivion" is quite possibly their best single ever aside from maybe "Juanito" and that one only ranks so high because of the brilliant video. (Seriously! Go watch it! Now!) But yeah, "Pirates..." is a better song - a bit more driving and way more hand-clappy and perhaps a little less goofy, though the lyrics are still completely nonsensical. It doesn't matter though, it's all about the delivery and I'm sure it's even better in-person. How could it not be? Browse a few live clips and you'll understand.

MP3: Grande - We did it all

Thu, 10 Apr 2008 11:42:05 -0700

Grande won the 2007 Spellemannprisen in the blues category, but I ignored him completely. I figured it was some old-man dansband type bullshit, so why bother right? You know- the kind of stuff that makes old men with their greased-back hair and classic American cars feel young and tough. Luckily, that's not really the case as Grande does more than attempt to capture a long-gone era that no longer exists. It's especially apparent on tracks like album opener "We did it all", a revved-up, tweaked-out recounting of all the illicit substances he's ingested. It's a potent cocktail of Buddy Holly rhythms mixed with ELO helium vocals and the psycho/silliness of fellow modern Scandinavian rock'n'roll revivalists PowerSolo. Not quite as ragged as, say, Doo Rag/Bob Log III or Black Lips, but they certainly compete with The Black Keys in terms of the rawk. Okay, so a few (okay, many) tracks on the album stray a bit closer to AOR territory like I feared, but I dig this one a lot and that's what matters.

MP3: The Tremolo Beer Gut - Nosy Parker

Mon, 04 Feb 2008 11:30:26 -0800

This is my "Nosy Parker" - a six year-old border collie. He's named after a street in Berkeley and was a last-minute rescue from the animal shelter in Sacramento. As is the nature with most BCs, Parker has his nose in everything and demands the be the center of attention.

Posted below is "Nosy Parker" from The Tremolo Beer Gut. They're a retro instumental act from Denmark with a new album called "Nous sommes The Tremolo Beer Gut. Qui le fuck êtes-vous?" out now on Crunchy Frog. Like many of their labelmates (Junior Senior, Powersolo, etc.), there's a definite kitsch-factor to what they do, but they do it well enough to deflect most criticism. However, as an instrumental act, I'd have to say that their crossover potential is severely diminished. This here is a fun little track with a hot guitar solo, but I'm gonna have to say that I prefer my own Parker overall.

Mon, 28 Jan 2008 12:45:38 -0800

Powersolo has added the track "25 women" to their myspace profile: http://www.myspace.com/powersolo

Video mix: Mr. Velcro Fastener, Aerial, South Ambulance, Strip Music, Gabriel Munck, more...

Thu, 19 Oct 2006 00:00:00 -0700

One of these contributions is from Simon Tagestam. The rest are from Avi. Guess which is which?

Mr. Velcro Fastener - Capek
Yet another one-take, made on a budget dance video, 'cept this one's a little bit different. Emphasis on little?

Aerial - Tour memories '06
Video collage + crazy feedback = totally awesome.

South Ambulance - Die 5times times5
South Ambulance are, in my opinion, one of Sweden's most underrated bands. This song is a cracker, and you can download it here. I hope they'll release something new next year, since I've played their last album to smithereens.

Johndoe - Kjøtere
Um, I'm not sure I get it, but great song though.

Powersolo - Juanito
Easily one of the best videos ever made. This time I mean it!

Strip Music - Sugar and lime
Devilocks! Goosestepping! Destruction! Yes!

Svensk emo
Swedish kids can be emo too.

Nasum - Kulturbolaget, Malmö, Sweden 13.03.01
Hint: definitely not from Simon. RIP Mieszko.

Gabriel Munck - Another day
First single from the forthcoming record. You hear it here first!
