Lars Pellarin is a minimalist techno artist from Denmark, probably most recognizable to readers here as being a member of Printer (via the Malmö-based Adrian Recordings). He also runs his own label Statler & Waldorf and puts out an assortment of elegant/eloquent techno records from other artists such as Mikkel Meyer and Melk. His new solo album "Gundsø" is named after the city he grew up in, north of Roskilde and is mostly a subdued affair, minimalist to the nth degree. Melodies struggle to rear their head above the smooth plateau of sound; generally speaking, it pulses along smoothly, content to elicit the barest of head-bobs. "Whistle like you're 56" is easily the most "pop" track on said record as it's one of two that feature vocals and, of those two, the only one to feature actual recognizable words. Still, the pop label is a bit of a stretch as I wouldn't expect to see it climbing the charts anytime soon -- not that it means it isn't worth hearing (it is!), it's just not that kind of track. This is head music. Crank it up and zone out!

This is the kind of track I can put on an endless loop and never get sick of it, that's how hot it is. It gets me moving. That slinky bassline is relentless once it gets going and those rare moments when it stutters for a second and misses the downbeat only add to the excitement. It gets even better once they start layering on the harmonies, pushing higher and higher, increasing the tension until the inevitable release. Adrian Recordings may have gotten their start with folksy indierock (David & the Citizens, Björns Vänner, etc.), but they've proven they can do techno just as well, if not better. Familjen, Printer and Boeoes Kaelstigen? That's the shit right there. If they don't do another guitar-based record again, I won't mind.

Discoveries of 2007

A list of discoveries is different from a list of what I've been listening to the most. It is also different from a best of list. A discovery list gives hope for the future. At some points I'm way behind everyone else. In some, maybe ahead. But this is my list. And in some cases it has more to do with re-discoveries.

People think that things has to be so divided into fragments and genres. People are not so narrow-minded. Put your trust in people and let people judge for themselves. It is ok to like cheesy things. It is ok to be intellectual. It is ok to listen to electronic music AND HC or singer/songwriter. All you have to do is simple open up our ears and listen. Do you like what hits your eardrums? Ok. Fine. Dance, listen feel as much as possible. As long as you trust your own amygdala and it serves you substances of feelings. That is all you need.

14 in alphabetical order.
Basutbudet
Boeoes Kaelstigen
Deadmau5
Matthew Dear
Den svenska tystnaden
Joy Division
The Killers
Edda Magnason
Panda Bear
Printer
Regina Spektor
The Teenagers
Andreas Tilliander
Tinariwen

If there is one more person out there that loves all of these at the same time, I would feel less alone. I doubt though...

---------------------------
Artists who released music in 2007 via Adrian Records include Familjen, Printer, Boeoes Kaelstigen, The Fine Arts Showcase and Emil Jensen.

Printer marks their foray into international territories with this EP, a small compilation of some of their better work off the album \"Rhizomatic baby\" and their recent \"I can take more\". The group\'s sound is very cool, slick electronica and almost has an old-school trance feel to it at times. Which is impressive when you consider that the group makes use of traditional instrumentation for the most part, and plays live sets to good effect. My initial impressions of the overall sound of the group weren\'t very good, however; their sound is almost too cool, much too slick. Like the sort of thing one would expect to see in a trendy[sic] car commercial, or worse yet, something pushing Skyy Vodka. Further listens however, reveal more substance to the band than the casual listener will take away from them. While not perfect, the lyrics are far better than your average vocal techno, ranging from sombre and pensive (\"Don\'t expect\") to mildly disturbing (\"Minds out\"). On the whole, while this EP has me looking forward to hearing more from the group, I\'m going to save my higher marks for a full-length release from them for the simple fact that this compilations seem less like a labor of love to me, and more of a marketing strategy. Till next time, Printer. Till next time.

Not only has Adrian Recordings expanded beyond the confines of guitar-based indierock, but they've also broken free from the unwritten rules of nationalism. You'd think that with Malmö being so close to the Denmark, you'd see much more cross-collaboration, but no - it simply doesn't happen. Or maybe you haven't noticed how border-obsessed the world of Swedish indie music fandom is? Naturally there are exceptions, but I generally find the scene to be surprisingly unadventurous. Perhaps ARC's signing of Danish electronic act Printer will help change things. If you liked Familjen (this month's Record Club pick), then there's a really good chance you'll like this too. It has a bit of the same warmth, especially in the vocal delivery, but the music is far colder and darker. Comparisons could be made to The Knife, but this track in particular reminds me more of early Skinny Puppy. That is, until the distorted bass comes in with the treble lead/pentatonic blues-lick outro. That part is definitely not like Skinny Puppy, so yeah - don't be scared off thinking that these guys are industrial boogeymen. It still might be a bit much for tamer indiepop fans, but I think you should challenge yourself and investigate.Buy Printer's new "Satisfaction" EP right here.
