Lazily, but somewhat accurately, described as Norway's answer to Kylie Minogue, electro-pop princess Annie has a fanbase ranging from tweens to tastemakers. One of those pop stars it's not uncool to like, she writes her own material, founded a Bergen club night, and has collaborated with countryfolk Röyksopp and Datarock. Annie's debut record "Anniemal" was released in 2004, and followed the tragic death from heart failure of her boyfriend and early collaborator Tore Kroknes. New album "Don't stop" steps up the electro-beats and is released internationally this month on her own label, Totally, and Oslo's Smalltown Supersound, after lengthy delays that saw Annie leave Island Records with the master tapes.

This month your album "Don't stop" is finally released in the US and UK, after a delay of more than a year. How does that feel?

It feels so amazing, I can't tell you. I don't know what it feels like to have a child, but it's that kind of amazing. I had to go through so much waiting around, with my old label [Island] saying "it's coming out now", then "it's coming out in a few months" and on and on. At this point I've already started to work on the next one. I'm on to the next level.

Why did Island delay the release at a time when Scandinavian music is doing so well internationally?

It was really annoying, it was typical major label stuff. I was signed by one person, who then left to go to EMI and the new person who came onto the project just didn't get the project at all. The people I was working with kept changing. It just doesn't work or feel right to make an album that way. You're working against a wall. But I'm really happy now that I have my own label, Totally.

And you're also collaborating with the Oslo label Smalltown Supersound?

Do you have any favourite new tracks?

I'm really happy with "Hey Annie", that's one of my favourites. I made that with Paul Epworth. And I have this song called "Marie Cherie" which is nice and relaxing. I was listening to a lot of French pop music at the time and I wanted to make something that had a cinematic feel.

With all the delays, did the title "Don't stop" begin to feel pertinent?

Yeah, it was very early in the project I called the album "Don't stop", and having done that, a lot of trouble came up with Island. The title kind of took on a new meaning. I couldn't change the title once I called it that! I had to keep going and it still had to be called "Don't stop".

Why did you take the single that had been released, "I know ur girlfriend hates me", off the final album tracklisting?

I was a bit annoyed because it was released in the wrong way. It was only supposed to be a small release but Island went ahead and did it the way they wanted, without asking me. I think it's a good song, but I took it off the album because a lot of people had already heard it and I had so many songs. I wanted to give people something new.

What have you learned about how to make music since the first album?

In the beginning I really concentrated on writing songs, on all the songwriting details. As time's gone, on I've become more involved in the production and in the whole process. I think the sound of this record is stronger and more direct than (previous record) "Anniemal". The first record sounded "nicer" somehow. It was a more innocent sound.

How have you achieved your status as a pop artist who is seen as having an edge and being credible?

My background is different from a lot of others, because it's listening to underground music and going to underground clubs and buying loads of vinyl. That will always stay with me. And I could never just lean back and let someone else do everything for me musically. I know what I want. When I was working with Brian Higgins at (British pop producers) Xenomania, he said he found me interesting because they work with a lot of artists who sit back and let other people do it for them, but I was really involved in the production and the whole thing.

(British girl group and Xenomania protégées) Girls Aloud sang backing vocals on your new track my "My love is better". Is it true their vocals have now been removed?

Yes, we were forced to take it away! It was record company business stuff. Girls Aloud were in the Xenomania studio as well -- it's a big place with lots of rooms -- recording their song "I don't speak French". Brian asked them if they'd sing and they said they love to do something, and they sang the backing vocals. They were happy to do it. But when we tried to clear it with the labels, we found we couldn't. People were worried in case our records came out at the same time.

In the 1990s you ran a club night in Bergen called Pop Till You Drop. Do you still DJ?

Yes, I still do it, I was just DJing just a couple of days ago in Istanbul. I'd like to do some kind of combination show that's a live gig and also DJing. I love to buy records, I buy new records every week, so it's good to get a chance to play them out.

Is the DJ scene and nightlife one of the reasons you've just moved to Berlin?

Well, the thing I like most is that it's so much cheaper here than in Norway, which is a ridiculously expensive place. And things are open late in Berlin and I work on my music until really late into the evening, so if I'm not too tired, I can still head out and go to a club and hear music, so I like that about it. I just got a new apartment here which I really love and I'm settling in. But I travel so much that I won't actually be here a lot of the time. I've also thought of moving to the UK, because I'm there so often and I really like it.

Has your famous cat Joey moved with you to Berlin? (Annie's cat, who she named after both Joey Ramone and Joey from New Kids on the Block, has been used by the press as a metaphor for her eclectic tastes).

No, sadly not. Joey got left in Norway with my mother. I'll always go back there to visit her. I'm not sure I'd be allowed to have her here in my apartment, but in any case where she is in Norway there's so much nature and it's beautiful. It's a much better place for a little cat.

Roskilde is undoubtedly the Holy Grail of Northern European summer festivals. It takes place close to the synonymous small Danish town, situated in the outskirts of Copenhagen. The festival opens its doors on the last Sunday in June with various warm-up gigs and events. The main programme kicks-off on Thursday and lasts until Sunday. More than 100,000 music lovers, volunteers, media, artists and merchants gather up in order to partake in this unique musical experience. The first-ever Roskilde took place in 1971 and was organized by two high school students and a promoter. Over the years it has grown so much it has become a point of reference in Scandinavia and one of the four largest festivals in the whole of Europe. Nowadays there are more than 170 bands playing on seven stages, of which the Orange Stage is the largest.

The weather this year was gorgeous, which had a direct impact on the mood of the hordes of aviator sunglasses-wearing, über-trendy Danes. Sun cream, Thai food and billions of liters of beer were consumed, while queuing up for attractions such as the "Human carwash"... The line-up consisted of names as big as Coldplay, Oasis, Pet Shop Boys, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More and countless others. I am going to keep my lips sealed as far as these acts are concerned, since this is not the reason for which you are reading this website. Please look elsewhere if you really want to know about Chris Martin's improved Danish language skills!

Day One

Mew's gig at Arena, the second largest festival stage, is the one I was looking forward to the most at this festival. This is a great comeback after four years of silence since their critically acclaimed album "And the glass handed kites". Everybody is so eager and impatient to see them again on stage; there must be more than 15,000 people in the audience. And it is worth the wait. This is a smashing gig! They deliver glorious performances of "Am I wry? No", "Apocalypso", "156", "Circuitry of the wolf" and "White lips kissed" among others. They also give us a taste of what's yet to come with the new single "Introducing palace players". Magic atmosphere and gigantic sing-alongs, during the course of an easily won home game. The new album with the unusually long title – deep breath - "No more stories are told today, I'm sorry they washed away. No more stories, the world is grey, I'm tired, let's wash away", is out on August 25th and should be one of the most promising releases of the year.

Later on, DJ/producer Trentemøller is headlining the Orange Stage. This undisputed national hero successfully manages to please the masses with a longer-than-two-hour set. His performance is ranging from blatant mainstream to more peculiar sounds and mixed up tunes by Soft Cell, The Cure, Bruce Springsteen, Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Britney Spears and, in the spirit of times, Michael Jackson. His onstage guests include Steen Jørgensen formerly from veteran Danish rockers Sort Sol, blues starlet Marie Fisker and most notably, Mikael Simpson. A crowd of 50,000 engages in a massive techno dance on an unforgettable summer evening.

Day Two

The morning after I head down to Astoria to listen to Faroese Orka, drawn by the hype that has been created since their recent collaboration with French "Amélie" movie soundtrack composer Yann Tiersen. They are a very interesting offering indeed, since they construct their own instruments entirely out of power tools and farm equipment and subsequently channel the sound through samplers and effect pedals. Their music is imposing, enigmatic and lifting at the same time.

Young Swedish sisters First Aid Kit are next on the bill in Astoria. Their mix of folk/country melodies with perfectly pitched harmonies recently attracted international attention. Plain orchestration creates a very intimate atmosphere and proximity. Apart from their own numbers, they even do two covers: Fleet Foxes' "Tiger mountain peasant song" and unexpectedly Kiss' "I was made for lovin' you", dedicated to their younger brother. Generally they do OK, but I think their music would work much better in a smaller venue.

Tromsø duo Röyksopp easily rule the Arena on Friday night. The venue had simply exceeded its capacity before Torbjørn Bruntland and Svein Berge appeared onstage. The crowd is very familiar with all their experimental dance-pop material. The most defining moment of the set by far is Robyn performing "The girl and the robot". The crowd simply goes mad! "Happy up here" and "Eple" are well received too. Fellow Norwegian Anneli Drecker appears wearing a mysterious owl costume. Apart from her own "You don't have a clue", she is charged with delivering "What else is there?", "Tricky tricky" and "This must be it", sung on record by Karin Dreijer, who is appearing also at the festival as Fever Ray. Partly because of a no-show and partly because of the actual performances the results on these three songs are slightly disappointing.

Day Three

A big number of Swedes in their early twenties (maximum!) are gathered in front of the Orange Stage to see Gothenburg's drama king Håkan Hellström. His 60's influenced pop works well under a blazing afternoon sun. Restless and exceedingly expressive, he is roaming across the stage while conducting his one-man-show. A charmer, Håkan doesn't miss an opportunity to flirt with the crowd and embrace their love in a very Swedish Robbie Williams way. Every word of "Klubbland", "Känn ingen sorg för mig Göteborg" and "För en lång lång tid" is sung religiously while confetti is thrown in the air.

The final Scandinavian act for me on Saturday evening and this Roskilde festival are Swedish jazz/fusion/acid/progsters Dungen playing on the Odeon stage. It's the music that counts here and not the show. They play a lot of stuff from their internationally well-received album "4". Tambourines, flutes, acoustic guitars and electric solos combined with brilliant basslines from Mattias Gustavsson are purifying for a tired and sleepless festival crowd. "Maleras finest" and "Det tar tid" are the best memories to take home with me. Thanks Roskilde.

Emerging Swedish pop starlet Lykke Li is among the 10 artists who won the European Unions' "European Boarder Breakers Awards" which rewards debut artists and groups who have successfully crossed their national borders. The award ceremony took place in Groningen (NL) on January 15, on the opening night of Eurosonic, one of the biggest European music industry gatherings. It's a Trap! met her a few minutes before the ceremony and took the opportunity to ask her some questions.

It's been a year since your album was released in Sweden, what have been the highlights for you?

I think there have been so many highlights. Releasing the album on my own label has been a highlight; and all the sold-out tours have been a highlight; and as well meeting Q-Tip and performing with him was amazing.

After all these gigs on both sides of the Atlantic, where did you enjoy playing the most?

I enjoy playing everywhere. If it's a good audience, if it's a good vibe, I really enjoy it. I couldn't choose one place, because they've all been kind of amazing. Paris has been good; and New York is always amazing for me; and Austria was amazing too.

Is there a place where you haven't played and you would like to?

I would like to go to Japan.

You've lived in various countries...

Not so many that people think, but yeah.

Which of these countries/places has had the biggest impact on you?

I think Stockholm has the most impact on me as a person.

What do family values mean to you, being from Sweden and having lived in countries with a much more traditional family structures like Portugal?

My family is very different from other families because we are very non-traditional. I've never celebrated big holidays. There aren't any of those things. There's no guilt involved either. I mean if you can't make it to Christmas, it's fine. Family are the people that will be there for you no matter what.

Some say that you've become a bit of a style icon. Why do you think people in Sweden are so style-conscious?

I think Sweden has always been so updated with culture and that's probably one of the reasons why we are almost as updated as if you go to Paris, or New York or London, it's the same kind of ideas. I think it is what you are shown in early age and people have got a sense of style everywhere; so very high aesthetics and design and everything. And I think that Ingmar Bergman movies, they set the standard.

Swedish music has been very popular abroad. What do you think sets the Swedish music scene apart from the rest of Scandinavia?

I can't say exactly. That's for other people to say, but I think it is coincidence vs. a lot of talent. And then maybe somebody gets successful and inspires other people.

Maybe because of the success of bands like ABBA?

No. I've never listened to ABBA in my whole life. I don't think it's because of ABBA.

Are there any other Swedish artists you admire and respect?

I like Wildbirds & Peacedrums, El Perro Del Mar and The Knife.

How did the collaboration with Röyksopp emerge?

I did that song so long ago, last May probably. And I guess they heard a demo and then they asked me. That was before everything. I just thought I'd give it a chance and then I recorded 2 songs for them.

How come did you choose to cover/remix Kings Of Leon?

They asked me as well because they released it on their EP. I like some of their songs; especially the song that I chose ["Knocked up"] is a song that I really liked.

What do you think European music has to offer, especially in comparison to the US?

I think European music has this quality that is raw and unpolished and real. Not overproduced.

What does it mean winning this award to you, especially since you didn't win the Swedish Grammys? Is it a bit of a vindication?

It's probably bad to say this, but I don't really care about awards so much.

You are in the beginning of a very promising career. At the end of it, would you like to be remembered for its singles or its albums?

For the albums.

What's your music background? Do you play any instruments?

I play the piano.

How did you meet Björn Yttling and Lasse Mårtén and how did your collaboration emerge?

I got Björn's number from a friend and then I called them up. We got on really well and then we started working together.

What about the follow-up to "Youth novels"?

I am still on tour. I am going back to the US in two weeks, and I have quite a lot of touring left to do.

Have you had some ideas already?

I've been on tour non- stop. But I have some ideas, yeah.

Acid House Kings - 7 days
This pretty much sums up their live show. Fun, light-hearted and brilliant. (MG)

Laakso - Aussie girl
This is my favourite band to come out of Sweden in the last few years, and nothing they have done has disappointed me. Here's looking back to the first record in hopes that many, many more will come. (MG)

Hello Saferide - The quiz
Hello Saferide was always going be a hit for the heart for many with such songs as "Long lost penpal" and "San Fransisco" - but it took "The quiz" to really dispell any doubts there may have been: Hello Saferide is quality. The video is lo-fi - did MTV show it? Doubt it - hence why this is a smashing chance for you to enjoy. (JC)

The Hives - Main offender
Despite being considered by many to be hasbeens nowadays, I still believe The Hives are a great band and dammit, this is a great song. Oh, and a ridiculously good video, too. (AR)

Meshuggah - New millenium cyanide christ
Not all extreme metal bands take themselves 100% seriously. Despite making some of the most heavy, precise, intense music ever, Meshuggah still knows how to smile and laugh. The perfect low-budget video. (AR)

Randy - Shape up & Human atom bomb (live)
Dudes in skeleton suits bash out two great songs in under four minutes. Makes you understand why many consider 'em to be Sweden's greatest live band. The picture is pretty damn dark unfortunately, but the sound quality is pristine. (AR)

Rough Bunnies – Poppy Eye
This video could have been made by someone wanting to satirize Rough Bunnies being so lo-fi and twee, and the video is almost too cute and lo-fi, but I still love it. (ST)

Röyksopp - What else is there?
There is something in this decaying mess of a video that is just gorgeous. It just makes me want to daydream all day long. Here's to floating. (MG)

Sigur Rós - Untitled 1
This is the greatest music video of all time. Seriously, nothing can top this. It's the most purely beautiful thing I have ever seen in cinamatic form. (MG)

Silverbullit/Citizen Bird - Joy
Is it art? Or just an advert? Either way, it's still eye candy. (AR)

.:Who's who?

MG: Matt Giordano
AR: Avi Roig

01. Interpol – Evil
I don't even really like Interpol that much but in the long run I can't live without this one. It started with the video and ended in an obsession.

02. Antony and the Johnsons - Hope there's someone
Mainly because it reminds me so much of my girlfriend. And because that someone can reinterpret the singer songwriter genre.

03. Röyksopp - What Else Is There/ What Else is There (Trentemoller Remix)
I think Röyksopp's album "The Understanding" is one if the best of 2006. In this one it is so nice to hear Karin Dreijer sing without filters. It reminds me so of Honey is Cool. The Trentemoller Remix is like a totally different song. The original aims at the hart the mix at the spine.

04. Swayzak - Another Way
One of my friends introduced this one to me. As with the best songs I didn't really like it at first but then it just grabbed me. Hard and mellow at the same time.

05. Final Fantasy - The CN tower belongs to the dead
I don't consider the Arcade Fire album to be a 2005 release, (even if it wasn't released in Sweden until 2005) if I did they would rule this chart. When I first heard Final Fantasy I didn't know that Owen Pallett had anything to do with them (or Hidden Cameras). This one got to me because it was so strange but at the same time so heart bleeding.

06. Felix Da Housecat – Ready 2 wear
I swear! I will never forget my 80's. I am devoted to Scotch and Miko Mission. When this one came, I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not. It was just too much and too cheesy. But I just couldn't stop listening and dancing.

07. Tomas Andersson – Washing up
I really wanna play this one in front of a really big dance crowd. You don't find that in Malmö. The base, the minimalism and the big beat. My god. My DJ in crime partner don't like it though. We fight about it.

08. Patrice Baumel - Mutant pop
One night at our club, I put this one on and the whole place just stops and listens and then the whole place just change to one rhythm. Everybody looks at eachother with some flirty eyes and just keeps on sipping.

09. Björk - Who Is It (Vitalic Mix)
I have the fullest respect for Björk but who listens to her nowadays. This one wouldn't be anything without the melody and her voice but once I heard the original I couldn't believe it was the same song. This is pop. Plain pop for a party night.

10. Vitalic - My driend Dario
Really. This is dangerous. I know that Vitalic already is considered killing a genre and almost silly but when this one came: My god. It rocks. It kills. It takes you back to former east Europe to a bunker and a squat-house-party with dirty junkies.
