The Bombhappies album preview

The Bombhappies have posted their entire new album "A good fire" for streaming in full via Soundcloud -- highly recommended for fans of jangly pop ala REM. Likewise, fans of such sounds are encouraged to check out Anchorless' latest record "Every nook and cranny" as well.

The Bombhappies - Ants

"Ants" is the first single from The Bombhappies' upcoming album "A good fire" and it sounds just as lovely and jangly as their earlier material. Look for said album to be officially released on March 9.

The Bombhappies announce new album

Swedish indierock act The Bombhappies have announced that their new album, tentatively titled "A good fire", is done and ready for release on March 9. They will be playing a release show that night in Stockholm at Kägelbanan/Södra Teatern, details here.

The Bombhappies to record new album at Silence

The Bombhappies will be heading off to the legendary Silence Studios in Koppom, Sweden next week to begin work on their next album, which of course is way out in the boonies of Värmland. Expect a summer 2010 release, assuming all goes according to plan.

MP3: Psychic Stunts - Wind up the sound

I didn't realize how good of a song "Wind up the sound is" until I saw the video. I guess I wasn't paying attention. Psychic Stunts bill themselves as something like a synthpop sideproject to The Bombhappies, but it's not so much swapping out jangly guitars for electronics than changing the tone. This one song does manage to halve the difference though; definitely more grit in the cracks, but still not totally devoid of REM allusions. Perfect for the weekend too- full of "fuck all" attitude, ripe and ready for getting pissed. I honestly love my job (really!), but I'm feeling it. Get out, get lost.

The Bombhappies may strike you as quite a surprising band to emerge from the Swedish music scene. Why, do you wonder? It's because they owe a rather large debt to R.E.M. as well as the early 90s US college rock scene. Sonically speaking, they are very raw/live sounding and said textures are, for the most part, carried throughout the album. It's a sound that is most successful on tracks such as "And at the bed bell inn I told you", "Nothing at all", "Madness" and "Brief delight". However, the true gem of the album is "When I'm asleep", with it's über-catchy chorus, lyrical romantic pondering and quick but potent guitar solo. Overall "Ok ok ok ok ok ok ok" is a good album and, while it may lack a bit in original ideas, the bands execution surely makes up for it.

MP3: The Bombhappies - And at Belle Bed Inn, I told you

"And at Belle Bed Inn, I told you" by The Bombhappies is a fantastic song that, to me, hearkens back to early REM. It's in the guitars, the vocals, everything. There's a wistful feeling in common as well, though that's far less unusual for a Swedish band. Regardless, it's more than just mere imitation and that's what makes it so good. They take the hallmarks of that mid-80s college rock sound and make it fresh. I'm all for pushing the boundaries of indierock, but sometimes that back-to-basics sound is all I need. The instrumentation of guitar/bass/drums, that standard rock'n'roll formula, is timeless when done right. Good songs are forever and I bet this will sound just as good 10 years from now as it does today.
