The song comes from the group's forthcoming "The first blood" EP.

Wow, is this a terrific band. "Failures" is my first exposure to The Chrysler and I'm captivated by the interesting vocal blend served up by Anders Rudstrom and Pelle Lindroth. You get one type of distinctive sound when each sings the lead, and another sound when they sing together (a low and mid-range combo). It's winsome melodic pop that's early-spring fresh, just a bit melancholic and laced with a dash of late '60s pastoral psychedelia. I love the nocturnal vibe of "This is midnight", with the muted bass and distant trumpet adorning the sparkling upfront vocal. "Along the freefall" is a lively mid-tempo shuffle, "Ring of a bell" brings on some old-fashioned horns in an unexpected manner and "Damn straight evil" is simply one of the coolest tunes I've heard lately. It's got tastefully minimal acoustic guitar, melodica (actually, the melodica is all over this disc, and I ain't complaining), and flawless lead vocals and harmonies. There is something really beguiling and relaxed about this band that is indefinably unique. And the U.S. release has five sweet (mostly acoustic) bonus tracks. A hearty "thumbs up" for this classic Swedish vehicle known as The Chrysler.

The Chrysler reports they just completed the recording of three new tracks with Henrik von Euler and will be releasing new four-track EP in late October. The songs included will be "Tonight I don't sleep", "Cold war classic", a cover of Bob Dylan's "Changing of the guards" and "First blood" from their latest album "Cold war classic". Don't be confused: the album "Cold war classic" doesn't actually include the song of the same name - it's exclusive to this new release. In other news, the US version of the band's first album "Failures and sparks" is out now on Galaxy Gramophone in a new edition with five bonus tracks. I actually just got a copy in the mail today and can confirm that it looks sweet, but I haven't listened quite yet.

What's not to love about this album? It got lush melodies, nice vocals, and clever lyrics. An example of this greatness can be found in the song "It was in 1982" when The Chrysler manage to incorporate the chorus of Neil Young's "Only love can break your heart" into the song (how clever!). If I hadn't bought some tea as a present for my mum for mother's day (it's on 29th May in Sweden), I would have given her this cd. That's how good it is (I woulnd't give my mum a shit present, you know).

The Chrysler has confirmed that their debut album "Failures and Sparks" is due for a US release around June via my pals at Galaxy Gramophone. Hey Jim - return my emails okay?

Don't forget to also check out the new batch of reviews posted yesterday evening. We've got the lowdown on new singles from Moneybrother and The Chrysler, demo reviews of Punky's Dilemma and The Sunday Orchestra, my official take on the new Logh and Simon Tagestam's assessment of a couple new Labrador releases.

Blue gold EP
Flora & Fauna

I like this three track single quite a lot. The Chrysler play very pleasant music, with lush melodies that lull along in a Beatles-esque way that serves as a perfect soundtrack while I'm sitting inside with a cold watching the snow falling outside (no hardcore punk for me today!). I wouldn't mind hearing more of this, and will definitely be on the lookout for their forthcoming album. Even the lyrics are pretty good, and not as contrived or as clichéd as their music invites you to think. The best song on the single is the second track, "Dear dad", and the main track "Blue gold" is oddly enough the weakest track here. Get it now before winter ends and all you want to hear is All Girl Summer Fun Band all the time.
