MP3: Printer - Satisfaction

Not only has Adrian Recordings expanded beyond the confines of guitar-based indierock, but they've also broken free from the unwritten rules of nationalism. You'd think that with Malmö being so close to the Denmark, you'd see much more cross-collaboration, but no - it simply doesn't happen. Or maybe you haven't noticed how border-obsessed the world of Swedish indie music fandom is? Naturally there are exceptions, but I generally find the scene to be surprisingly unadventurous. Perhaps ARC's signing of Danish electronic act Printer will help change things. If you liked Familjen (this month's Record Club pick), then there's a really good chance you'll like this too. It has a bit of the same warmth, especially in the vocal delivery, but the music is far colder and darker. Comparisons could be made to The Knife, but this track in particular reminds me more of early Skinny Puppy. That is, until the distorted bass comes in with the treble lead/pentatonic blues-lick outro. That part is definitely not like Skinny Puppy, so yeah - don't be scared off thinking that these guys are industrial boogeymen. It still might be a bit much for tamer indiepop fans, but I think you should challenge yourself and investigate.

MP3: Tobias Hellkvist - When everything fell apart

Swedish artist Tobias Hellkvist first made a name for himself with his sublime acoustic cover of Efterklang's "Step aside" (listen at myspace). The electronics of the original are beautifully transcribed to organic instruments. In many ways, it's not too disimilar to José González's famous version The Knife's "Heartbeats". Neither cover supplants the original electronic version; they stand alone as individual works, like two sides of a coin. On Tobias' new album "Transports" however, the focus is shifted from sublime acoustic pop to drone as the work is entirely instrumental and lacking in conventional guitarwork or song structures. The track "Moment at Ven" (listen at the aforementioned myspace link) is most straightforward of the pieces in that it's built around a recognizable guitar figure, albeit enhanced with digital effects and backed by field recordings. It's a beautiful, languid piece of music, but I've decided to share one of the longer, more abstract tracks instead.
"When everything fell apart" buils layers upon layers of shimmering waves of sound, gradually getting louder and more intense as the piece continues. To me, it's the sound of lying in the sun without care of obligation: pure bliss. Voices and guitar fragments come and go, but the gentle wave of the cental chordal theme continues unabated throughout. It's the kind of ambient dronepop that I can listen to on endless repeat (and sometimes do). You want feel-good summer jams? Look no further.

Samuraj Cities
Live @ Inkonst, Malmö, 04/05/07

Samurai Cities delivers. And with a bang I might add. Uncompromising as a supporting act for indie-darlings Ladytron, these guys never made an effort to reach out and play the easy cards. It's dark, gloomy and right up my alley. The crowd however, consisting exclusively of Ladytron-fans waiting for the headliner to get up on stage, didn't really seem to appreciate these Göteborg-lads. But only for that reason, I assume. Nevertheless, with one record released, the band has already great qualities live and the danceable, electronic indierock that is "Cheap deluxe" is well adjusted onto the stage. Being more of a rawkdude I like the more distorted tunes where it sometimes sounds a bit like Dinosaur Jr. but hey, no one can really resist "My modest ones" with its similarities to The Knife and Bright Eyes (aiming at the "Digital ash in a digital urn"-record). Along with Mixtapes & Cellmates, this is by far one of the most interesting electronic acts Sweden has to offer at the moment.
