MP3: The Early Days - Make you smile

Hey, alright! 2nd rate psychrock ala The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Primal Scream. This is the kind of stuff that's best experienced at extreme volume so you can get properly lost in the reverb because otherwise, there's a whole lot of nothing going on. That's drug music for you -- let yourself space out and get down and it's all good; listen at low volume for pop hooks and be bummed. I can handle the glacial pacing when I'm in the right mood, but loudness is key. Don't bother looking if you aren't willing to get lost.

MP3: Silverbullit - Only gold

Besides Broder Daniel, the one band I really would have wanted to see at Way Out West was Silverbullit. I've actually been fortunate enough to see them twice already, once when opening for The Soundtrack of Our Lives in SF and again at Umeå Open in 2005 when they so obviously blew away every other band. Even today, without a new album to support since 2004's "Arclight", I'd still rank them as one of Sweden's best bands. And now I read that they even got Freddie Wadling (Cortex, Blue for Two, etc.) to make a guest appearance? Gah! I should've been there! YouTube just ain't gonna cut it. Silverbullit's massive wall of sound simply doesn't translate to the small-screen format.

Still no word on whether there will ever be a new album, but at least we can still celebrate their back-catalog. Here is "Only gold" from the aforementioned "Arclight".

Swedish rockers Wired For Mono have one last free track posted for download before the release of their new album: http://www.wiredformono.com/
RIYL The Soundtrack of Our Lives or other retro-ish rawk'n'roll. Actually, it's just plain recommended as I've been digging all the tracks they've posted so far.

MP3: Siena Root - Waiting for the sun

When it comes time for me to reflect back on my favorite releases of the year thus far, my prime criteria is always which albums I've listened to the most and I have to say, I don't think there's been any other record that's come close to Siena Root's "Far from the sun". I think we (my wife + I) actually wore out the CDR promo we played it so much. No matter, I just figure that's a better excuse for me to grab a copy of the gatefold vinyl and seriously, is there a better format for music like this? As the Swedes say, this is "hårdrock", plain and simple. A bit of the heaviness of Black Sabbath, but more groove oriented ala Iron Butterfly or early Deep Purple. Sweet riffs galore! And dig that (faux?) sitar on this track -- anyone that can get down with The Soundtrack of Our Lives should be all about it. Sames goes for you Witchcraft and Graveyard fans, too!

The long-promised boxset from pre-The Soundtrack of Our Lives act Union Carbide Productions is now officially cancelled, but it seems that remastered versions of all the albums (including bonus tracks) will be released in conjunction with the next TSOOL record, whenever that is.
