MP3: Theresa Andersson - Na na na

I missed Theresa Andersson's opening number last night, but I'm going to presume that it was "Na na na". It's the obvious choice really, as not only is it the first track on her new album "Hummingbird, go!", it's simply a great song. It also firmly establishes her skill as a loop-based solo performer, something you plainly see in this video that circulated not too long ago. As for the rest of the set (I came in during "Birds fly away" thanks to a long drive and a lack of convenient parking), Theresa did a great job working the cool, but ultimately receptive audience who I presume were all there to see the headliners Squeeze. Actually, "work" was by far the overwhelming motif of the set judging by the way she juggled all of the instruments and vocal lines. Which is not to say she struggled through it, rather it served to exemplify how difficult it is to create such intricate music by oneself. The level of talent on display was unquestionable. The result: a long line of converts back at the merch table post-set wanting CDs and/or signing the mailing list. That is the measure of success.

MP3: Theresa Andersson - Birds fly away

Theresa Andersson is a Swedish expat multi-instrumentalist based out of New Orleans with a new album "Hummingbird, go!" coming out on Basin Street Records on September 2. Hopefully you've already checked out the video for "Na na na" which is spectacular showcase of her musical prowess and now her PR firm has followed up with the go-ahead to post "Birds fly away", so that's the track I'm sharing with you today. It's got a southern gospel feel in the melody, something I'd fully expect to rub off on anyone residing down in NOLA, mixed with a girl-group stomp. Oh, and lots and lots of handclaps. Again, her skills with loops and layering are superb -- even if you can't see it for yourself, hopefully you can at least try to picture each separate piece in your mind. Be patient though, eventually you will be able to see how it plays out as she'll be touring extensively in the near future. Dates at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/theresaanderssonmusic

I'm actually kinda surprised to see that the hype on her is kinda subdued so far, but then again, all too often it's the best music that goes ignored. Pity!

Check out a video of Swedish-born/New Orleans-based artist Theresa Andersson performing the song "Na na na" live with an array of loop pedals: http://theresaandersson.com/video/mov.html
Her Tobias Fröberg-produced album "Hummingbird, go!" will be out September 2 via Basin Street Records.

The new Tobias Fröberg album "Turn heads" is now confirmed for release on April 9. The first single is called "Slipping under the radar" and he will be touring the UK in May as support for Ane Brun. Hear a few songs at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/tobiasfroberg
In related news, Swedish/American artist Theresa Andersson covers two of Tobias' songs on her new album "God's highway" and he also contributes lyrics to another four. I think that one will be out in spring.

Tobias Fröberg will travel to New Orleans to produce a new album from Swedish/American artist Theresa Andersson. He'll also be working as co-producer on Existensminmum's next album. As for his own solo work, look for the new record "Turn heads" to be released soon.
