"Dude!" That's my immediate, uninhibited reaction on putting on the new Truckfighters album "Phi" and hearing opening track "Atomic". That guitar tone is so thick and meaty - totally lacking in definition (can you hear the individual notes in each chord? nope, no way. attack? forget about it.), but more than heavy enough to inflict serious trauma. Nothing sharp about it at all, it's pure brute force and absolutely perfect for the kind of music they make. Less like a club, more like a wrecking ball. The impact is less precise, but still powerful. If there's only one thing to appreciate Truckfighters for, it's that damn tone. Stoner-rock perfection I say! Oh, and the song ain't bad either - the obvious Black Sabbath worship (that solo part!) is ever-present, but it's tempered by more progressive, modern touches ala QOTSA. You get the swagger without the tedious retro trappings that doom many others of their ilk. Quality rawk that's heavy as hell, that works for me.

Fuzzorama Records has signed a deal with US label Meteorcity (Hermano, Atomic Bitchwax) to cooperatively release the third pressing of Truckfighters' excellent album "Gravity X" worldwide. Look for it on February 7 in the US, late March in Europe. Highly recommended for fans of fuzzed-out stoner rock.

Today's mp3 comes from Truckfighters off of their new album "Gravity X", due out April 11. It sounds exactly like what you'd expect from a label called Fuzzorama Records: huge walls of big muff guitars and tons of heavy monster riffs. When it comes to stoner rock, most people instantly think of Queens of the Stone Age and there are some definite similarities here. However, Truckfighers are way heavier and they tend to bury their vocals (and pop sensibilities) to keep the focus on the guitars. There is definitely crossover appeal, but that's not what they're about. They also have a much stronger classic metal influence - this particular song doesn't do it too much, but there's tons of excellent dual guitar harmonies all over the record. Oh, and plenty of Black Sabbath-influenced jam breaks. My favorite part about this track is the way that final hypnotic riff just keeps going on and on and on. It's almost enough to make me want to start smoking weed again. Crank it!
