Great albums always make me reconsider their premonitions on a type of music, especially with that labeled as "experimental". Such is the case with the new Pistol Disco release; for a while I had been a bit lost on what to write, however, now I am finally able to. What bewildered me the most was, how symmetrical the musical experimentation is being created here. At once the undercurrent was layer in drone and melody, yet all loose ends were always resolved. Gone was the notion that noise had to be profligate and vociferous, it can also be so constructed and confined to an eggshell, a thin membrane separating the outside from that within -- one that is also crafted with the same care.

Kompjotr Eplektrika (aka Mats Björk) might be said to have mellowed out since his debut, the 2005 plane crash that was "RedisetKompjotrAllesklaarEplektrika". Although you'll find plenty of white noise, hisses and screeches on "Darrk circuits fadead waves", it still is a display of far more subtlety than his earlier broken computer noise aesthetic. The tracks range from slow, pulsing drones reminiscent of Pan Sonic ("Blikktztunddonner", "Gradient curse") to more frantic, twisted electronic tomfoolery ("Crakkin zombeez...", "...and the brainfreeze"). However, where acts like Pan Sonic or Pistol Disco manage to somehow reach out and involve the listener in their experiments, Kompjotr Eplektrika never truly seems to emerge from its own bizarre universe. The simplistic rhythms, loops and beats remain a monotonous and at times inane two-dimensional backdrop instead of invading your head like you'd hope they would.

Our dear editor-in-chief Avi, who is far more learned in this genre than I, jokingly accused Pistol Disco of selling out by adding beats to their no-wave noise approach during an mp3 posting of his. To those of you who truly do feel that Pistol Disco have forsaken themselves by adding danceable beats to a number of their up-tempo compositions, I have no idea what to buy you for Christmas! While unfamiliar with bands such as this Göteborg duo, it was the drum beats, shifting chords, and sense of direction that drew me into "Radiation". Sounding like Wire or "Warsaw"-era Joy Division cranked to eleven, blasted through wrecked club speakers on a night where I already know there's no way I'm making it home, tracks like "Walking with Jesus" and "Upside down" easily converted me to Pistol Disco's manipulated waves of distortion. Though there's also a softer side to this record, with "Sweetheart" and "Air" having been steadfast companions during peaceful evenings spent writing on my balcony; their fluid transition into closing tack "The sunshine underground" ending the record on a powerful and convincing note. While I am an admitted newbie to the noise genre and have no knowledge of the 'similar bands' that appear on Pistol Disco's last.fm page, "Radiation" has been a fun and interesting record to break my teeth on, and to come to enjoy.

Pistol Disco are a coercion in much the same way Josh Wink managed to harmonise the repetitive and extremely limited keys on "Higher state of consciousness". Is there a genre for installation art noise, or has it just been mentioned - bar exposure to the UK's Appliance I am unaccustomed to the likes of Pistol Disco's ilk - who I must admit have the best name of any act naming them self "disco". It's one of those heavy synth-laden, instrumental guitar swirling affairs full of careering soundscapes but with one hell of a callpynous rear and overtly indulgent, not least the final track "Cheree" which runs to 14.36 minutes. Not since Donna Summer's 1980, real Disco classic, "I feel love" (15 minute mix) have I been as vortexed!
