Hope on the horizon

Receiving extremely favorable reviews, especially from Deutschland, Boy Omega's fourth album continues along in the singer-songwriter vein that propelled Bright Eyes to enviable heights with 2002's "Lifted..." and again with 2005's "I'm wide awake, it's morning". While some kind bloggers have compared "Hope on the horizon" to such seminal albums as "Blonde on blonde", "Hope on the horizon" is an alright album with some fantastic standout tracks - opener "A quest for fire" being the best. After a few tracks however, the strings and horns start to blur together, as do the songs, and "Hope on the horizon" begins to feel like a record you've heard even before you finish your first listen. It's not bad, it's just not remarkable either.

A Tenderversion Recording/Stereo Test Kit

What is it with Swedish bands and spectacular debut albums? Audrey's first proper full-length could very well be the defining indie record of the year. I can hear a range of influences varying from Cursive to "Gran turismo"-era Cardigans (minus the electronics) to Nick Drake and Spiritualized. However, Audrey entirely owns their sound. This is a band that has grown into their first album and realized their potential. Songs like "The significance of being overt," "Treacherous art" and "Views" are beautiful (actually, this whole album has left me stunned, as it is so melancholy, formal and beautiful). I tip my hat to them for creating this, and whomever is their booking agent - get this band to tour with Sigur Rós, they deserve it.

Stereo Test Kit

What a great compilation this is! It's the first in the series from Stereo Test Kit Records, and it's a fantastic mix of the best Swedish indie music around. It starts of with two of my favourite songs this year: El Perro Del Mar's "Dog" and Heikki's "Former hero", then it continues with a few tracks by artists I've never heard but were surprised how good they were (e.g. Björn Kleinhenz) and some other tracks I've heard before that I really like (Sambassadeur's "Between the lines" being one of them). The compilation is pretty cheap as well, so if you've never heard of most of these bands I think you should try and get your curious fingers on it. Now I can't wait until Stereo Test Kit release the second volume; if the quality will be this high it can't be anything but a must-have.
