Familjen - Mänskligheten
(Adrian Recordings/Hybris)
The opening of Familjen's "Mänskligheten" was enough to give me pause. Here is one of my favorite Scandinavian electronic artists and an album I've been looking forward to for a little while now, and the first track sounds like a lazy, bedroom remix of a forgettable '90s techno track. Even with the outstanding "När planeterna stannat" following quickly after the trainwreck of an opener, a bad taste was left in my mouth as the album progressed. What has always attracted to me to Familjen is the songwriting, the indiepop playfulness embedded into the electronic framework. This is lacking from an artist like Kleerup, who is great in his own right, but approaches electronic music with more of an affinity for the mainstream. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this tact, it's just not what I've come to expect from Familjen after falling for "Det snurrar i min skalle". "Mänskligheten" -- with the exceptions of "När planeterna stannat", "Man ser det från månen", "Viggo", and "Det var jag", the standouts in my opinion -- could act as the soundtrack to a film set in Ibiza. Is "Mänskligheten" a bad album? By no means. It's just that the clever songwriting that sold me on "Det snurrar i min skalle" is mostly sitting in the passenger seat on this particular journey.

There is very little is Ibiza, more Todd Terry (cow bells through the disc), through to the lower bpms akin to Gazettta Italia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CMrtb2EYKk and on and on.

Granted, the Ibiza comment may have been a little flippant. I should have kept hammering away at my disappointment that Familjen took a turn away from the crafty electronica of "Det snurrar..." and towards more mainstream, less inspired electronic music avenues.

The album just takes another turn into a world where the musical landscape is now getting on for 30 years old, so the expanse to cover is great.
Try and find a mix tape or something from the Drum club at Shaft, UK circa 91. It's all very upbeat.
There is so much correct about the album, the correct instrumentation, the correct depth to each song.... let's face this fact: Familjen has been knocking about with Kent... this album could have been Depeche mode -A-G-A-I-N- and that would have been no good for anyone!
Suck it up...listen to the tracks with Ninsum Poli

I agree, another heavily Depeche Mode inspired record would have done little for the world. I don't hate "Mänskligheten" (despite the Ibiza thing, I still gave it a 6/10), it just didn't have that near-instant appeal that "Det snurrar..." had for me, even with my relative inexperience in the realm of electronic music.
Perhaps after giving some of your recommendations (Todd Terry, Gazetta Italia, the Drum Club mixtapes) some time to sink in, I'll find something in "Mänskligheten" that I overlooked.
