MP3: Samuraj Cities - Saturday night is never fair to everyone

I wasn't the only one impressed with the Samuraj Cities demo (see my original post here). Imperial Recordings (José González, Eskju Divine) wasted no time and quickly swept them up for their roster. The music is still quirky and lofi and imbued with that fantastic, dark sense of Melody that made me appreciate the band in the first place. "Saturday night is never fair to everyone" doesn't quite reach the same level of despair as say, Broder Daniel, but it comes close. The vocals are more weary than anguished - just like as with yesterday's song from The Alpine, the song's protagonist is sick and tired of the same old shit. The approach is completely different, but the sentiment is the same.

I've never liked Melody Club and their cheap and nasty synth-driven melodic pop, but their latest (and third) album is much better than I thought it'd be. Saying that, my expectations for it were lower than you can imagine. I've always thought of them to be quite pathetic, but they've become much less so now, which is really in their favour. The hit single of the album "Destiny calling" sounds like something by The Sounds and I can easily picture the song soundtracking a video featuring fast open top cars (after writing this I checked out the video on YouTube and was very disappointed, they've managed to make a very non-anthemic video for an über anthemic song), and I wouldn't be surprised if the Roxette fans of Germany and America will love this. If they'll keep on progressing like this, come their 27th album, and I might just buy it for my niece.

MP3: Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words - In perfect and imperfect circles

The drone of Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words is a lofi rumble compared to the earth-shaking throb of The Idealist (as discussed here). I don't say that to disparage DLSODW, rather to distinguish them. Also, whereas I remarked that The Idealist is well-suited for loud listening, DLSODW is quieter and more creepy, more dungeon-like if you will. Employing minimal synths buried with twisted field recordings and other found-sounds, the sound of Dead Letters is dismay and dreary - perfectly suited for dark winter evenings. The particular piece I've posted today from the new album "Old ghosts, new ghosts, all ghosts" swells and reels along with a distinct slow melody before finally collapsing into total static at the very end. Considering the miserable weather we've been having 'round these parts recently, this hits the spot.

MP3: Johndoe - Nattskift

A few months back, I posted an mp3 for the song "Kjøtere", the first single from Johndoe's latest album "Dødvinkel". Little did I know, said record would go on to become of my favorites for 2006. How would I? Just like you, I only had one (albeit great) song to go on. So let us revisit Johndoe once again, this time with the song "Nattskift". Frontman Jonas Skybakmoen explains the lyrics:

"Nattskift" literally means "night shift". It's a song about not knowing what will come later in life. When you get older, you seem to think a lot more about these things. In short, the story is about a ghost like old neighbour that never sleeps. Every night, he leaves his apartment, only to play the slot machine at the local gas station. The protagonist in the song comes across him late one night, and for a second, their eyes meet. And the protagonist gets afraid, because he can see the reflection of himself in the old man's eyes. This meeting with his "future self" kinda leads him to contemplate where he is going in life. So "Nattskift" deals with themes of destiny, chance and uncertainty.

Not speaking Norwegian, the thing I like best about that song is that infectious Melody line that sounds like a guitar doubled with cello. And that noise in the first chorus that sounds like a reverb tank being kicked over. Love that too. Look for the copies of "Dødvinkel" to appear in the webstore soon.

MP3: The Idealist - The knives are my eyes

It's hard to define exactly what it is that separates good drone music from bad. Melody? Rhythm? I'm not so sure. But I do know this: The Idealist is good drone. The opening track on his new album "I am the fire" fills the room with a warm glow as it ebbs and flows through its four-and-a-half minute course. This is not music for ambient background listening, this is something that demands to be cranked up loud enough so that it completely encapsulates your being. Headphones will do, but I think the speaker treatment works best as the bass is powerful enough to shake the room. This is music that's just as important to feel as it is to be heard. The listening experience should be just as physical as it is emotional. At full live volume, I bet it's absolutely transcendent.
