MP3: Ted Gärdestad - Beat it, girl

I used to wonder why none of Ted Gärdestad's early records have been remastered and reissued on CD, but now, having purchased copies of the first three ("Undringar", "Ted" and "Upptåg") and listened to them many, many times, I can confidently say that all of his worthwhile early material is readily available on best-of collections. Case in point: "Beat it, girl"; the final track off his 1972 debut. This is bad white-boy funk best left to the dark, forgotten corners of history, but thanks to modern technology, I'm able to resurrect it for your, uh, "enjoyment". Actually, as far as bad white-boy funk goes, it's really not that bad, but I certainly wouldn't go so far as to call it good. Really, how bad can it be when you essentially have abba as your backing band? Even if the song isn't so hot (it isn't), it's well executed. So with that damnation of faint praise, here's yet another original vinyl rip for you this Friday.

MP3: Siena Root - Waiting for the sun

When it comes time for me to reflect back on my favorite releases of the year thus far, my prime criteria is always which albums I've listened to the most and I have to say, I don't think there's been any other record that's come close to Siena Root's "Far from the sun". I think we (my wife + I) actually wore out the CDR promo we played it so much. No matter, I just figure that's a better excuse for me to grab a copy of the gatefold vinyl and seriously, is there a better format for music like this? As the Swedes say, this is "hårdrock", plain and simple. A bit of the heaviness of Black Sabbath, but more groove oriented ala Iron Butterfly or early Deep Purple. Sweet riffs galore! And dig that (faux?) sitar on this track -- anyone that can get down with The Soundtrack of Our Lives should be all about it. Sames goes for you Witchcraft and Graveyard fans, too!

Siena Root - Waiting for the sun

Duplicate Records has a bunch of new releases on the way. First up later this month is Mëkanïk and their debut MCD "Der Mëkanïk Grööves", a band described as "black metal taking acid with 70s proggers like Van Der Graaf Generator and having sex with Black Sabbath," or as they say, "Black Space Doom". Ex-members from Dismal Euphony and Gehenna, so yeah, definitely interesting to say the least. Next up in late June is Norwegian viking metal act Eljudner with the 7" "Blod og kvad" and following that later this summer is a reissue of black-thrashers Infernö and their albums "Downtown hades" and "Utter hell" combined in a single set. As for the future, look for new releases from Warbastard and Beyond Dawn, details to be announced... eventually.

MP3: Siena Root - Time will tell

Siena Root is the kind of band that forces me to involuntarily break into air guitar heroics every time I hear them. I swear that I try my best to remain skeptical of retro rock like this, but I can't help it. Shit is irresistible! They bust out mad pentatonics ala Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, but instead of the doom and gloom most people (wrongly) associate with that band, the music is incredibly catchy and even kinda glorious when you get down to it. It manages to tap into this weird false nostalgia for a time I never lived, yet somehow that doesn't bother me. I just want to turn it up and rock out. Screw over-analyzing it, grab your favorite mind-altering substance and enjoy.
If you dug that Graveyard track I posted awhile back, you'll love this.
