The Ark has never been a band content to write songs. They write anthems, through and through. From their breakout top ten hit, "It takes a fool to remain sane", to newest single, "Breaking up with God", they've graced us with a string of the finest, most bombastic pop/rock of the new millennium. "Arkeology", spanning twenty tracks, spills over with hits. Stacked one after another, it's a staggering ride through 70's glam rock, emotional new-wave and heart-on-sleeves balladry -- always with a sing-along chorus at the forefront. While their albums were consistently top-notch, especially at the band's mid-decade peak, The Ark will always be remembered by their singles. And there are some giants here. The dizzying "Calleth you, cometh I"; the sneering "Father of a son"; the contemplative, rousing "One of us is gonna die young". If you're only familiar with the band from their glitzy 2007 Eurovision entry, "The worrying kind", you may be stunned by what else is on offer. This music will make you feel giddy. The Ark have a knack for taking simple pop ingredients and making them seem impossibly galvanizing. The band wisely curtail entries from their less-than-stellar 2010 album to a pair of singles towards the end of the compilation. Thankfully, "Stay with me" receives a remix, giving it a fuller sound more in keeping with the rest of the tracks. Two new recordings, "Breaking up with God" and "The apocalypse is over", bookend the collection. The former is a punchy pop confection proclaiming frontman ola salo's break with organized religion in his usual uplifting fashion. The latter manages to sum up The Ark's career in a triumphant, yet bittersweet swan song. It's a milestone when a band like this decides to call it quits, but I can't think of a better collection of songs -- er... anthems -- to leave as their legacy to the world.

Turbonegro frontman Hank Von Helvete is following in the footsteps of ola salo (The Ark) and will be appearing as Jesus in a Norwegian stage production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". The show opens on September 3 at Det Norske Teatret in Oslo.

The song is called "Come on you preachers" and it features guest vocals from ola salo (The Ark). As for their new album "Happy go lucky", I have no idea if/when it'll be out, but you can hear a few tracks at the band's website.
There will be a boxset of recordings from the ola salo (The Ark) production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" released in March when the show ends featuring wo discs of music, plus the Swedish libretto and pictures from the set.
It's not quite the same level as ola salo doing "Jesus Christ Superstar", but Danish artist Jomi Massage will be performing a starring role in the musical "Bag 7 Døre" being put on by the theater group Kaleidoskop. Read more (in Danish) at Gaffa: http://gaffa.dk/nyhed/31008

Distributed for (free) download on Swedish torrent site The Pirate Bay as well as the band's web site, "The golden daze" tries to be glam pop for the masses, crafted to capture the listener at first listen. Being Malmö based, the band emulates its more successful neighbors, namely The Ark and Melody Club. In this it is successful, but only as an emulation. Despite stabs at punk-laced electro and (oddly enough) swing on the title track, there's not enough originality here to distinguish the band from others. Forgettable as it may be, however, it can also be pretty fun. All tracks are very radio friendly, though none are likely to become radio hits. The production is the album's strongest suit. Aside from a great turn by The Ark's ola salo, who gives "Rather do it" (a minor hit in 2006) the kind of behemoth sound that we're used to from these sorts of bands, the rest of the album is produced by Oskar Humlebo (aka Moto Boy). He drenches the band in serpentine rhythms and new-wave synths, which helps to disguise the fact that you're not going to remember many of these songs in a few months. Still, for fans of the over-the-top Malmö based pop sound (like me), there's plenty to like here. Unfortunately, there's just not enough to love.

The Ark frontman ola salo will premiere his new symphonic piece "Linnæus Rex" on January 28 at Växjo Konserthus in his hometown of Växjö, Sweden for the 300th anniversary of the birth of Carl von Linné. The composition is described as a "symphonic poem written for orchestra, choir and piano soloist" and will feature pianist Per Tengstrand at the debut. "Linnæus Rex" will also be performed twice on January 30th for the general public.
