The Tarantula Waltz - s/tThe Tarantula Waltz

A garment woven from fraying, lonely threads, "The tarantula waltz" is an exploration to be placed alongside Vetiver's "To find me gone" or a strange collaboration of Songs:Ohia and Nick Drake. Instead of exploring the emptiness at the heart of many of their songs, The Tarantula Waltz survey emptiness slowly filled by guitars and voices, by strings and melodies. Far from a cheery record, it isn't terribly depressing either, merely contemplative and pregnant with pauses and silences - very much a canvas that can be painted by the world of the listener. I can imagine "The tarantula waltz" being a dark indulgence during this cold, dark, nearly claustrophobic winter season, and a warm, thoughtful recess during summer's lengthy, sun soaked days. All in all, there's as much honesty as there is twang in this record, like Johnny Cash held to the building pace of Sigur Rós. Definitely worth looking into.

And the Sound

Having dedicated a decent amount of the past five years of my life to the music scene (in various functions and positions, most ending in savage failure), I've developed a rather refined musical palate. I nod and smile and say things like, "Yeah, this band's not too bad" when a friend plays me a song or a group they've recently fallen in love with, but rarely do I find these sessions truly rewarding. My ears have been damaged too long and too often by music for me to continuously fall over myself for new bands like I used to (but I desperately search for that wide eyed, naïve boy in the landscapes painted in new records), not unless they're really bringing something to the table. And Immanu El's "They'll come, they come" is unquestionably a forceful and substantial album; an effort that probes sections of our musical consciousness that have fallen into shadow and been ignored too long.

Sweden has Aerial and Once We Were, both bands supporting a very high standard for the cinematic explorations of other Scandinavian groups, and Immanu El pass this rigorous assessment with flair and elegance. As is often the case with exceptional records, the closer is brilliant. "...in valleys" is a sweeping, graceful composition, and a fitting conclusion to an album that effortlessly traverses terrain we typically associate with bands like Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and Logh. It's difficult to truly do anything novel and unique in the genre of post-rock, but Immanu El come damned close, at the very least combining all the beauty that the aforementioned groups investigate in a subtle, distinctive manner. "Panda" demonstrates how essential Claes Nilsson Strängberg's voice is to the overall sound and achievement of Immanu El. Vocals are often absent from these types of explorations, and attempting to place a voice into the strata of other instrumentation is a complicated and precarious procedure. Immanu El excel in this respect, and in a myriad other respects throughout. Absolutely brilliant.

Cartridge
Enfant terrible
Glorious Records/A:larm Music

If anyone at NME is reading, here is you next favourite band. Cartridge sound draws very heavily from the sound of modern British rock (Kasabian, The Rakes, Arctic Monkeys), and whilst I'm not too into that whole scene, I believe they could easily handle their own on a bill with any of those groups. On "Enfant terrible", Cartridge is overflowing with energy and it shows on every track. The band keeps a rather quick pace throughout each track that, when preformed live, one can only assume it is the same, if not faster. "Coma state" and "Rooms painted green" are two noteworthy tracks on here, however in my estimation, "Tree crowns" is the best on the record.

MP3: Fontän - You, me & a tree

The word that best describes Fontän is cinematic. It's an intriguing blend of electronic and acoustic instrumentation painted with a broad emotional palette. Often playful, joyous even, but also languid and brooding as on the track I've posted today (which happens to feature guest vocals from Sarah Assbring aka El Perro Del Mar). What can I say? I like droning pop. But I also like how the album "Aktionskammarn" runs the gamut from happy to sad and back again, sometimes within the context of single track. The composition and arrangements are exceptional as well - Fontän shows deft control over their pieces despite the variety of sound. Again, it's this embrace of diversity that makes the music so strong. Cerebral, but not necessarily challenging if you catch my drift. Very recommended.

Frida has left All of My Brother's Girlfriends due to the large distance it takes her to get to practice and her increasing committments with her other band Rough Bunnies. She will continue to contribute to The Flame though, another group with Pontus from AOMBG. As for AOMBG, a new EP entitled "I painted You a Dinosaur (a declaration of love...)" will be recorded this fall.

Baby Woodrose is releasing a new album called "Dropout!" on September 20, but it's not a proper full-length. Rather, it's a tribute to the garage=rock groups of the 60s that have influenced the band over the years. Four of the tracks were recording during the sessions for the last album "Money For Soul" and the rest of the lot were done when the project idea was finalized. Tracklist:

01. Can’t Explain (Love)
02. I Lost You In My Mind (The painted Faces)
03. Who’s It Gonna Be (The Lollipop Shoppe)
04. I Don’t Ever Wanna Come Down (The 13th Floor Elevators)
05. The World Ain’t Round, It’s Square (The Savages)
06. Dropout Boogie (Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band)
07. I’m Going Home (The Sonics)
08. This Perfect Day (The Saints)
09. Not Right (The Stooges)
10. A Child Of A Few Hours (The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band)

The first single will be for the song "Can't explain".

Check out the new Johan Lehman-directed video for the song "painted People" from The Confusions right here. In other news, the band will be releasing "The Pilot" as a new single in France at the end of the month on Marc Music, a division of Warner Music France.

Check out some stills from the new video for "painted People" from The Confusions: 1 2 3 4

The Confusions got a nice write-up recently in the UK's Evening Telegraph reviewing their album "Trampoline". "Add these guys to the list of superb Swedish bands," they say along with their four out of five score. Not bad, eh? In other news, the band has been filming a video for the next single "painted People" with director Johan Lehman. An airport runway, a deserted supermarket and a ghost town are among the scenery they say to expect when it's released sometime in August.
