Finnish folk/vocal group Värttinä has a new website: https://www.varttina.com/

Värttinä has signed with Peter Gabriel's label Real World Records and will see their tenth album "Miero" ("Outcast") released in January 2006. The release coincides with the North American premiere of the new Lord of the Rings musical in Toronto which, as posted year ages ago, features music co-composed by the Finnish group.

The world premiere for the stage adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings" has been set for Toronto in Spring 2006 to coincide with the 70th anniversary of J.R.R. Tolkien beginning to write the trilogy and follows the 50th anniversary of the publication of said trilogy. As mentioned before, this is revelant to IAT because Finnish folk group Värttinä cowrote the music for the production with A.R. Rahman and Christopher Nightingale. Press Night is set for March 23, 2006 at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre, with preview performances from February 2 througn March 22, 2006. Public tickets go on sale on May 16, 2005 via lotr.com. The London premiere is now set for Autumn 2006.

Finnish vocal group Värttinä reports that they have begun rehearsals this week for their tenth studio album and will be entering the studio in August to begin recording. In other news, the "Lord of the Rings" stage production that they have been working on is nearing completion and expected to premiere in mid-March.

Pitchfork has posted a review of "Käärmelautakunta" from Alamaailman Vasarat today:

"Well, I guess there's nothing left to do but pick up and move to Finland. In the summer, it's almost unbearably hot where I live, my rent's too high, and no offense family, but you're just not cutting it. Furthermore, the Fins [sic] have the best music: in the last year I've been fortunate enough to jam to new records by Circle, Luomo, Värttinä, Gjallarhorn, Pharaoh Overlord, Uzva and now Alamaailman Vasarat. They say it's cold there. They say people drink profusely and go for weeks without talking. Never mind all that, I'll just stake out a Helsinki street corner somewhere, slip a Sibelius disc in the Walkman, and witness the magic. I'm going to do that right now."

Mikael is no stranger to director-work either - previous credits of his include videos for Petter, Blues, Pain, Robyn and A-teens. Read more. (in Swedish)

Okay, I'm totally pissed off because my webhost fucked up and somehow erased all my database information from the last week. Whether or not they'll be able to bring it back remains to be seen, but I am obviously not happy about the situation. So yeah, if you see weird things happening to the site, chances are it is not my fault.

UPDATE: I managed to recover a bit of last week's info from Google's cache (with the kind help of DJ Martian), but not everything is back to normal. I've got the info stashed away somewhere, but I'm still hoping that my webhost comes through for me with the backup.

Man, can Division of Laura Lee ever complete an entire tour? Seems that DoLL had to recently pull out of the current Turbonegro jaunt due to serious illness. The statement from the band:

Dear audience,
This tour has been amazing in all ways, fantastic audience, met some incredible people, everything was amazing until May 20.th in Zürich when Jonas was too sick to go onstage, due to fever and influenza. Hakan & I went onstage to fulfill our duties , but left the stage after 10 minutes of making noise.
David got seriously ill and it got even worse when he tried to go onstage. His illness became acute and he had to be taken to the hospital's emergency room where the doctor had to drug him for his pain and put him on an intravenous drip. David is ordered to be in the hospital for observation for the next 3-4 days and will not be able to fulfill his duties on the rest of the dates on this tour. Yesterday evening we were not even able to establish contact with David as he was on such heavy medication. Our tourmanager Erik Welén is sitting by David & will keep us updated. We are right now heading back to Gothenburg.
We'll keep you updated & again we are so sorry to cancel the upcoming dates in München, Köln, Bielefeld & Berlin. We'll be back.
Take care
Per Stalberg 22/5
