As you might already know, this is Annika (Hello Saferide) Norlin's new project sung entirely in Swedish. I've listened to it quite a lot, and I must say I hold pure unconditional love for this album. It's quite odd, since I'm not the biggest Hello Saferide fan. The songs here are extremely peppy, and Annika's vocal delivery and lyrics are quite often undoubtedly inspired by Jakob Hellman (e.g. the "Jag vill inte gå på återträff och återträffa dig" line in "Sanningsdan"), which is fine since there's nothing wrong with sounding like the man who released the best ever album sung in the Swedish language, is there? The best song on the album is actually (as previously posted by Avi) "Sanningsdan" - a duet with Martin Hanberg from Vapnet (there's also another fine duet with Markus from Laakso). The rest of the songs are also fantastic, even the slow songs are great. I never expected I'd like this album this much, but I do! I do!

Laakso has confirmed that their new album "Mother am I good looking?" will be released on April 18 and you can now listen to two new tracks on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/laaksolaakso
The first single is a duet with Peter Jöback entitled "Italy vs Helsinki".

Maria Eriksson of The Concretes just released a solo record under the name Santa Maria. The record was produced by Johan Bethling (Tape) and features guest appearances from both Lars Skoglund and Marcus Krunegård of Laakso. Read more: http://www.slottet.eu/santamaria/

Seeing as how "Writer's block" was my top album of the past year, I was excited (which might be an understatement) to see them on one of their few dates West of the Atlantic. I had high hopes for the show and they were exceeded quite easily. The band was flat-out amazing. The songs take on new textures in a live setting, with the band highlighting aspects one would not normally expect, such as a stripped-down and gorgeous version of, as Björn introduced it, "Remembering the words to the song" otherwise more commonly known as "Amsterdam". The live interpritation of "The chills" gave a new perspective on the track. To the enjoyment of the crowd, they played "Young folks" in the middle of the set and were joined by Victoria Bergsman and Lars Skoglund (of Laakso) for a rousing version of the track and, later in the encore, paid tribute to Ms. Bergsman with their Concretes cover "Teen love". Overall, this show was fantastic and the band's onstage charisma and playfulness vehemently lets the audience know they're enjoying it. That blatant honesty between performer and crowd is something that's missing with most bands these days. Peter Bjorn and John are on their way to becoming one of the best indie pop bands on the planet, all the while having a great time doing so.

Laakso's Finnish alter-ego has recenly posted some new tracks on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/laaksofi
The band is currently in the studio recording with producer/Bear Quartet guitarist Jari Haapalainen who is also apparently contributing quite a bit of his own musicianship to the proceedings.

MP3: Laakso - Merry Christmas

Hey y'all, happy Thanksgiving! I've got Laakso's contribution to the "Oh no... it's Christmas!" comp as a special treat for you today, my favorite track from said release. Everyone knows the trials of traveling home for the holidays - the expectations of familial obligation, the uncomfortable meetings with old mates from school, all the ensuing pain and frustration. It's universal and even if you don't celebrate Christmas, you'll probably have some similar experiences to help you relate. Really, this song could just as easily be about Thanksgiving; well, if they celebrated said holiday in Sweden I guess. The tune itself isn't much more than a Violent Femmes rip, but I don't think it's a big deal. The lyrics are the important part and the story is sang with humor and warmth. The more hysterical that Laakso frontman Markus Krunegård gets, the more the song rings true.

Tickets are now on sale for next month's Tack! Tack! Tack! showcase on December 11 with David & the Citizens and Laakso: [click here]
Yessir, Laakso is now co-headlining and will be closing out their UK tour at the Social. Not only that, they will be celebrating the fact that they just got dropped by UK label Nude Records before their album was even released! I hear it was even pressed, but for whatever reason they decided to not go through with it. Anyhow, it should be an amazing show, so buy tickets early if you want in.

Video mix: Katatonia, Nikola Sarcevic, Munck//Johnson, Frida Hyvönen, Thomas Dybdahl, more...
