Presenting: Nuaia

Swedish/Danish electronic/jazz/experimental trio Nuaia will release their self-titled debut album on October 26 and are previewing a number of tracks at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/nuaia
RIYL Midaircondo, Under Byen, or maybe Stina Nordenstam. Well worth checking out.

MP3: Dear Euphoria - That you would

This is something that would've actually fit in perfectly with last week's quiet music theme, but I simply didn't have the time to put the figurative words to paper. In fact, featured artist David Åhlén shares production and engineering credits on a few tracks, including this one. Similarly, Dear Euphoria (aka Elina Johansson) is dark and mysterious, not too unlike Stina Nordenstam in some regards, but warmer and approachable, more analog and more intimate. 'Ghostlike' is the word my wife used to describe her voice just a few minutes ago when she walked by my office and was wondering who I listening to. Certainly can't argue with that, especially when Elina lets loose those huge harrowing swoops, way up towards the ether. It sounds so eerie and other-worldly and, of course, quite beautiful. So yeah, definitely not boo! scary! ghostlike, but still absolutely haunting. Very recommended!

MP3: Astrid Swan - Sea/e life

As if it wasn't totally obvious from the cover, Astrid Swan's new album "Spartan picnic" is far quirkier than her debut "Poverina". It looks like something I might expect from Stina Nordenstam, though the "Spartan" of the title is entirely misleading as Ms. Swan readily embraces a full, big-band sound. However, her quirk only extends so far. There's nothing here quite as out-there as Marybell Katastrophy or As In RebekkaMaria, especially not in lead single "Sea/e life". I like it a lot more than anything on the first album, but I'm having trouble finding a strong melody to hold on to. Elsewhere on the album she fares far better, such as on the bombastic title track, so despite my misgivings about this particular song, I wouldn't write her off. And don't forget her work with Treeball either (together with producer Nick Triani). It's kinda like how Neko Case is at her best when performing with New Pornographers, Astrid Swan can be the same way with her other band. All about context.

Before I listened to this album, I'd heard about three Lykke Li songs. Those tracks were all catchy and fantastic with great melodies, so I naturally expected her album to be more of the same. What a surprise I was in for! The album consists of a bunch of songs like those I've previously heard, but then there's a whole weirdness thing going on, a bit like Björk or perhaps more similar to those sounds Tom Waits has made his own. The album's quite spooky, and it's got a factory feel to it. The juxtaposition of spookiness with melodic choruses and such poppy devices such as handclaps work very well though. Li is the fortunate owner of a marvellous voice and on the slower tracks it reminds me of Stina Nordenstam. The parts I'm not particularly fond of are the ones where she talks more than sings, but even those ones manage to create an intimate atmosphere that draws you in. This album surprised me, but even though I'd accept twelve "Little bit"s with open arms, the songs on "Youth novels" make for a strong, interesting and intriguing debut album that incorporates many interesting elements without solely relying on them.

The Susanna & The Magical Orchestra cover of Prince's "Condition of the heart" will be included on an upcoming Prince tribute compiled by Rapster Records, due out in February. Another notable contributor is Stina Nordenstam, whose near-unrecognizable version of "Purple rain" originally appeared on her 1998 album "People are strange". David Byrne's latest Internet radio show is a special feature on Nordic music: http://davidbyrne.com/radio/index.php
Unsurprisingly he tends towards the more ethereal end of the musical spectrum, covering artists such as Stina Nordenstam, Under Byen and Anja Garbarek.
