Barely touching it
Kite Recordings

Sometimes it feels as if I haven't listening to anything but male Scandinavian singer-songwriters this year, and now with the UK radio playing José González every two seconds, I'm not even left alone in the office from these boys with guitars and broken hearts. Thomas Denver Jonsson has fortunately done a solid album that is very similar to the work of über singer-songwriter Will Oldham (whose brother features on the album). There are a lot of great melodies on "Barely touching it" and one of my personal favourites is "Dance floor borders" because of its heavy Neil Young vibe. It would be cool if José González, Christian Kjellvander and Thomas Denver Jonsson all could go out on tour together – what a showcase for mellow Swedish music that would be!

New mp3 and a top ten list today from Swedish singer/songwriter Thomas Denver Jonsson. Now that's synchronicity! Thomas' new album "Barely touching it" came out not too long ago on Kite Records and should appeal to folks who dig Will Oldham, Magnolia Electric Co./Songs:Ohia and the like. I actually like Thomas' record better than any recent release from those two artists. The song I've posted is the opening number and is a bit more lowkey than the rest of the album, but it's still a good introduction to his laidback country style. Good stuff. And don't forget to check him out live - he's got a bunch of dates lined up in the next month:

12/15 - DJ set, K6, Karlstad (SWE) w/The Mellowmen
12/17 - Kåren, Karlstad (SWE)
12/25 - tba, Årjäng (SWE)
12/25 - Kvarnen, Töcksfors (SWE)
01/11 - Harmonie, Edam (NL)
01/12 - Eurosonic 2006, Groningen (NL) (Grand Theatre 8:45pm)
01/13 - Muziekcafé Backstage, Deventer (NL)
01/14 - tba (NL)

Thomas Denver Jonsson - I'm with you all the way

If you look to the right you'll see that there's a new EP for download on the IAT netlabel from Pacta Sunt Servanda. It's funny the way these things come together sometimes. Just two weeks ago I got an email from singer/songwriter Thomas Denver Jonsson with links to some of his new songs and a postscript about a local electronic artist he enjoys. I followed the link, downloaded some songs and was immediately impressed so I sent off an email inquring about possibly working together in the near future. We corresponded a bit and barely another week goes by before I suddenly find five brand new tracks waiting for me in my inbox. How amazing is that? PSS (aka C-J Larsgården) creates his ambient drones from a variety of sources: keyboards, guitars, tape-loops, field recordings, computers, whatever. But I prefer not to dwell too much on the mechanics of creation, but rather just sit back and enjoy the evocative nature of the music.

Thomas' new album "Barely touching it" has been delayed slightly, but will be officially released on October 28. Good stuff.
