Goodnight Monsters' debut album was one of the positive surprises of the year for me. It's filled with gorgeous melodies and cute melodies. They've already recorded their follow-up which is very exciting news. If you're into your Teenage Fanclub, Boy Least Likely To, etc, you can't afford to miss out on this great band.

Who are Goodnight Monsters? How did you come to be?

We are Matti, Valtteri, Markus and Jussi or Juha. We decided to form a band to spend time in a cool way. It happened in 2004.

How long have you been together for?

For the first year there were only Valtteri and Matti who made the first album together and then the others joined them in 2005 for gigs.

What are your inspirations?

Music by other people, girls, body painting, horror movies, sitcoms, mother nature.

What do you guys do besides the music?

One of us rents boxes, one of us works in a school and two of us are students of some kind.

What's in the near future for Goodnight Monsters?

We are just recording a new album and it's almost finished. We have some gigs coming up too and hopefully we get to play abroad again since it's the most fun ever ever 100%.

How do you record your songs?

Well the first album was recorded in a living room in a very homemade way. We had only one microphone and not even a mic stand so we just held the mic in our hands.

On the new one, we've gone a bit more professional. The studio we're working in (yes, a real studio!) is called HI-5 and it's actually a basement. There are all kinds of instruments there like a glockenspiel, an eko tiger and drums, bass etc and we are just goofing around!

What album / film / book did you like in 2006?

We really dug the new Yo La Tengo album, the film "Other people's lives" and bookwise the Bob Dylan chronicles and Gene Simmons' book "KISS and make up" and the new Haruki Murakami book.

Why should anyone listen to Goodnight Monsters?

Hmmm, we have never thought about that actually. But we hope that more and more people will find reasons and listen to us.
