MP3: Billie the Vision & the Dancers - Ghost
I figure that since I've already spent the last few Fridays going back to revisit a few earlier 2006 releases that I didn't cover as much as I should've, I might as well continue the trend. In that spirit, here's an mp3 from Billie the Vision & the Dancers and some words from frequent contributor Matt Giordano:
It's really hard to describe this because it is just a remarkable piece of songwriting: subdued and beautiful; aching and tragic. This is just one of the reasons Billie the Vision & the Dancers have ascend.d high up the Swedish indie scene. I'm looking forward to hearing what they do next and, for those of that have never heard of them, you can download their albums for free from their website. I'd just like to give a huge "Thank You" to the band for giving away their beautiful music.
And thank you Matt for sharing the love. This is a band that a lot of people, myself included, expect big things from in 2007. Keep an eye on 'em!

MP3: Moneybrother - Jag skriver inte på nåt
As I'm sure a lot of you know by now, Moneybrother just released a new album called "Pengabrorsan" featuring Swedish versions of all sorts of various cover tunes. I was mighty tempted to post the Operation Ivy cover of "Freeze up" (here titled "Det blir ingen dans") since the band is so near and dear to my heart, especially having grown up around the East Bay punk scene. They were one of the very first punk bands I ever heard and, while I never got to see them myself (I was too young at time for my parents to let me venture off to Gilman St., though I did manage to sneak in one Green Day show at age 13), I regularly saw all the ex-members around town and their bands (Rancid, Schlong, Common Rider, etc.). However, and this is what it all comes down to, the track just isn't that hot and even a guest appearance from Howlin' Pelle does little to redeem it. On the other hand, Moneybrother wisely chose to cover Wire, my second-favorite band of all time just behind the almighty Black Sabbath (yes, two English bands but that's a discussion for another time). Moneybrother's take on "Mannequin" (here billed as "Jag skriver inte på nåt") doesn't stray far from the original besides the translated lyrics, but I'm okay with it since it's such a great selection. You won't need to know Swedish to join in with the la-la refrain at the end.
(note: I've seen some incongruous tracklistings for "Pengabrorsan", so if I got the titles wrong, I apologize)

MP3: Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words - In perfect and imperfect circles
The drone of Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words is a lofi rumble compared to the earth-shaking throb of The Idealist (as discussed here). I don't say that to disparage DLSODW, rather to distinguish them. Also, whereas I remarked that The Idealist is well-suited for loud listening, DLSODW is quieter and more creepy, more dungeon-like if you will. Employing minimal synths buried with twisted field recordings and other found-sounds, the sound of Dead Letters is dismay and dreary - perfectly suited for dark winter evenings. The particular piece I've posted today from the new album "Old ghosts, new ghosts, all ghosts" swells and reels along with a distinct slow melody before finally collapsing into total static at the very end. Considering the miserable weather we've been having 'round these parts recently, this hits the spot.
Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words - In perfect and imperfect circles
News updates may continue today depend.ng on how I feel, being that I am still in NYC somewhere. Whatever happens, things will surely be back to normal come Monday. Oh, and the Swedish Music seminar was excellent. Big ups to Anders, Johan, Carolina, Dan, Brooke and everyone else I met up with. I'll try to gather my thoughts and write something about it this weekend.
In my inbox this morning from Thomas Denver Jonsson:
How are you. I'm fine. In fact, I'm very touched after Saturday's show together with Dear Euphoria. We played at a charity show for cancer research in memory of this girl Helena's best friend. Helena organized this show and it was very touching. One of my strongest experiences on stage. You always puts on a new personality and a new attitude when being on stage, something that was impossible on this night. I sung on one of Elina's (Dear Euphoria) songs and she guested me on three of mine. It was just perfect.
Hey, I just uploaded two new demos on my website. Of course it's demos and a little lo-fi and trembling but someone might find it interesting, I don't know. It's one new and the one I uploaded on myspace some month ago:
end.com/denver/mp3_Thomas_D_Like_Friend..mp3" target=_blank>"Like friend. falling in love"
end.com/denver/tdj-onlyforbeginners.mp3" target=_blank>"Only for beginners"
It's reference tapes and it's meaning is to make me remember the song, not to make it public. But... I guess I just did.
Not only does Swedish indie label Music is My Girlfriend.have a end.com/" target=_blank>new website, but they've also announced plans to launch a 7" single club. First up will be "Fragile heart" from Celestial in November and records from Fireflies and The Faintest Ideas will follow.
MP3: Teddybears - Hey boy
No doubt you've probably heard the Teddybears single "Cobrastyle" by now. It's exactly the kind of ubiquitous pop hit that end. up on infinite repeat and follows you everywhere you go. Kinda like the Caesars' "Jerk it out" was a few years back, and oh man did they ever play that one to death. It's fitting that both songs are from the same mind, Mr. Jocke Åhlund. Another parallel: both bands' US debuts are not actual albums, but collections of various tracks. Not quite what I'd call 'greatest hits', but along those same lines. It's no surprise then that both suffer the same problem that often plagues such collections - the tracklist has no flow. However, let's be fair: Teddybears' US debut "Soft machine" is probably not intend.d to be the sort of record you sit down to listen to from beginning to end. It's tailormade for DJ sets and mixtapes. All of the tracks are great individually, but they don't form a cohesive package when thrown together. It's party music. It won't change your life, but it'll get the dancefloor moving. Ain't nothing wrong that as long as you know what you're getting into. Instead of posting something from "Soft machine" I'm going back to 2004's "Fresh". I can see why "Hey boy" was left off the US release - it's just a bit too similar to "Cobrastyle" with its wordless refrains and bouncy beat. That doesn't make it bad, just redundant. Nevermind that both tracks appear on "Fresh". If the rest of the album followed the same formula, I'd be bummed, but when there's two tracks that are both this hot, you'd be hard-pressed to find fault.
