MP3: Ella Rouge - Manhattan

I've mentioned my appreciation of Christian music a few times here and there, but I think some clarification is in order. When I talk about good Christian music, I mean passionate stuff like Namur and Isolation Years or 16 Horsepower and even the Louvin Brothers. It's important to note that except for the latter, all of these acts consider themselves musicians first, Christians second. The mission is to make music, not necessarily spread the gospel, though inevitably their convictions are reflected in the music. Want an example of what not to do? Listen to today's mp3 from Ella Rouge. This is exactly the kind of empty, vapid music that gives Christian rock such a horrid name. If the Holy Spirit moves you in profound ways, the music should reflect that. Hiring a gospel choir to double the final chorus is no substitute for real emotion. The first couple songs on their record aren't so bad - overproduced and generic yeah, but listenable. I probably wouldn't change the channel if they came on the radio. But this song? Terrible. Painful even. Download at your own risk. Some trivia: The band features the vocals of one Ludwig Andersson, son of Benny from abba. Though technically proficient in every way, I feel his talents could be put to much better use.

MP3: Hellsongs - Seek & destroy

I have very conflicted feelings about Hellsongs. On one hand, I can't help but love their stripped-down, loungified takes on metal classics. But on the other hand, I hate it when people think that metal is only approachable from an ironic standpoint. Dammit people, there is no shame is liking metal. Metal rules, okay? We all know that Manowar is silly, but they are still awesome. Either you get it or you don't. Now I'm not exactly sure what the motivation is for the folks behind Hellsongs, but I suppose I should assume them to be pure-hearted unless proven otherwise. Their lazy, organ-driven take on Metallica's "Seek & destroy" is just too good to think otherwise. Please! Don't let me be wrong! Forget about Mark Kozelek and his lame acoustic AC/DC covers - that stuff was pure novelty and the charm wore off after a few listens. When the original songs are good, it doesn't take much to make them work sans distortion. Being said, some of the selections from Hellsongs' "Lounge" EP work better than others. Iron Maiden ("Run to the hills"), Black Sabbath ("Paranoid") and the aforementioned Metallica track (posted today for your enjoyment) are all top quality. Motörhead ("Orgasmatron") and Judas Priest ("Breaking the law") are a tad less good, but still decent. My wife comments: "They don't sound like they could break the law, they sound like they can barely get off the couch." As for Van Halen's "Jump"? Hmmmm, no thanks. Diamond Dave is the only reason the original is any good at all and without him, there's little left that's appealing. All in all, a fun EP - as for the future, a little Hellsongs goes a long way, so let's hope that they don't overdo it.

The Rajaton and Sinfonia Lahti (one of Finland's best-known symphonies) will release their abba tribute collaboration on November 1. The title of the record will be very straightforward: "Rajaton sings abba with Sinfonia Lahti"

Asteroid/Blowback
Split
Fuzzorama Records

In case it wasn't totally obvious from the cover art, this is a heavy slab of fuzz-heavy stoner-rock. Two bands, six songs each, a grand total of just over 60 minutes of music. Since I consider Black Sabbath to be the greatest band ever, I can def get into this, but since I also tend to prefer later Ozzy-era Sabbath ("Sabbath bloody sabbath", "Sabotage" and yes, even "Never say die"), I'm kinda lukewarm on this disc. As with most stoner-rock, this stuff leans much more heavily on early Sabbath - all bludgeoning power chords and heavy doom'n'gloom atmosphere. I can dig it, but it's also been done to death and doesn't touch upon all the other reasons that made Sabbath so amazing. Trouble figured it out with "Manic frustration". It can be done. So before I run my mouth off with a treatise on my favorite band, let me leave it at this: Asteroid and Blowback are good bands. This is a good CD. Just not great.

MP3: Mustasch - I hunt alone

Download today's mp3 and listen to that chunky guitar tone. It doesn't get much meatier than that! And the swagger of that riff perfectly compliments the guitar-tone. When Ralf Gyllenhammar comes in with his wailing vocals and the guitar parts split into harmony, you may just be tempted to throw up the devil horns. Do it! Despite the silly name, Mustasch is not some semi-ironic, Johnny-come-lately metal band. As exemplified by the recent LOTFP manifesto on so-called 'False Metal', there's a mighty thin line between what metalheads consider to be true and the poseurs who pollute the scene. It probably all seems ridiculous to the outsider, but any long-time metal fan will assure you that it really truly is an important issue. Mustasch's 2002 debut full-length "Above all" is a modern classic of true Heavy Metal (with capital letters). It's got all the best elements from bands such as Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and old-school Metallica, but with the extra heaviness made possible by today's recording technology. Many bands try, few succeed.
